Catster reader Chelsea asks: Why does my cat like attacking the feet of anybody who sleeps at my place? I warn everyone to keep the covers on, lest they get a rude awakening.

When I was a young Catgirl, we had a kitty named Simba who used to attack our feet from behind couches and chairs as we walked by. He frequently pounced on my little brother like a lion on a gazelle. Mom, an animal lover like me, was pretty patient until the day that Simba drew blood. As far as I was concerned, Simba and my little brother were equals on the food chain, so when mom took Simba back to the animal shelter I was distraught.

I hope your cat is attacking feet in a less bloodthirsty manner. If your cat is still young, its possible he will grow out of this phase. Still, the name of the game is distraction until you are confident kitty is over his foot fetish.

Cats are natural hunters, and they are only following their instinct when they assault your friends tootsies. Continue to warn your friends about this habit and encourage them to be assertive with the squirt bottle when it happens. You could also try loud noises to scare the cat away, but Ive read that that could make your kitty more skittish depending on her temperament. Just be firm when you tell kitty no,” otherwise she might assume its playtime and continue noshing on the tasty toes!

When Your Feet Are Meat
By Sarah Donner

When all your friends are sleeping soundly on the couch
Thats the time
When your kitty cat is jonesing for a munch to satisfy
His appetite
And if their legs are twitching, its so tempting,
He has to bite
The fleshy foot is a gazelle inside their mind

Youve got to train them so your toes dont entertain them

You could try to play
Wear ’em out before bedtime
Wherever your guests stay
Leave a squirt bottle by the bedside

Kitties dont like it when theyre sprayed with water in the face
Like when youre occuping Wall Street and the police spray you with mace
There are solutions to this problem, like pennies in a can
If you rattle it, you startle cats or just clap your hands
Just clap your hands

Youve got to train them so your toes dont entertain them

You could try to play
Wear ’em out before bedtime
Wherever your guests stay
Leave a squirt bottle by the bedside
