Mama Cat Nurses Tiny Hedgehogs and Kittens

When four babies are orphaned, Sonya takes them as her own. Did she know baby hedgehogs are called kittens?

First of all, we need to investigate something very important. If baby dogs are called puppies, and baby cats are called kittens, what are baby hedgehogs called? After a quick Google search, we discovered that baby hedgehogs are called pups, piglets, kits ... or kittens!

When we stumbled across this video, we were scratching our heads. We've seen lots of cross-species fostering, but never anything like this, especially since cats and hedgehogs are natural enemies. But after we learned that baby hedgehogs are also called kittens we were like, "Oooh, well that makes purrrfect sense!" (Here at Catster we always talk like we're cats, of course.)

This ginger mama not only nurses a litter of four spiny kittens, she's also grooming a kitten of her own kind. Mothers never get a rest, do they!

The kitty is named Sonya, and she came to the aid of these babies when their real mother was, unfortunately, killed.

Sonya is working hard, but it will pay off in the end. As we saw in this video, a hedgehog's quills provide the purrfect mobile head scratcher -- excellent for when the two-legged butlers are too sleepy to get out of bed at 5 a.m.
