“Congress Avenue Bridge is the home to one of the most unusual tourist attractions, the largest urban bat colony in North America. Around sunset, from March to early November, you can watch 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats fly out from under the bridge. They go out at around sunset in search of their food which are mosquitos and other small bugs. The best time for this bat viewing is late July through mid-August. If your pooch is a bird-watcher, he or she might just notice all the bats in the sky. To view the bats, some people stand on the bridge, some go to the shoreline of the Town Lake, while others watch from the Bat Observation area. There are even Bat Interpreters at the observation area Thursday through Sunday, from June through August. The observation site is located at the Austin American-Statesman (local newspaper) at 305 South Congress Avenue. Free but limited parking is available after 6pm. If this lot is full, extra parking is available at the Texas Department of Transportation office parking lot, off nearby Riverside Drive. ”
