“Since 1993, Project POOCH, a non profit organization, has matched incarcerated youth at the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn, Oregon with "11th hour" shelter dogs. The youth train the dogs and then place them for adoption in the community. For many of the youth this is the first time they have experienced the unconditional love of an animal. Like some of the dogs, many of the youth have been abused and neglected, so the youth find a great sense of pride and accomplishment in teaching the dogs to trust again. Each day, the youths practice the principles of positive reinforcement and behavior modification. As the trainers manage their dogs, they learn how to manage their own behavior. They also earn school credits, develop good work habits, and acquire valuable occupational skills. It's a win-win-win for the youths, the dogs, and the community. ”
