Chewed up clothing. Or a stinky surprise waiting for you on the kitchen floor. Those are the things dog owners can avoid if their pets aren't left home all day, Donna Shane says in her sales pitch for the new Kool Diggs Doggy Daycare business she opened Monday. She said hers is the only business of its kind in the Oneida area. "Syracuse has a good number of doggy day cares. We have clients who are driving their dogs into Syracuse. There's nothing out this way," she said. The business opened on the south end of the Oneida Shopping Center on North Main Street, in the former storefront that once housed Ladies Workout Express. An open house is planned for Oct. 31. Shane, of Cazenovia, is a certified dog obedience trainer who had worked as a nurse for 25 years. Her husband, Stanley Shane, owns a business that sells the Pet Stop fencing product for pet owners. They say local veterinarians have encouraged the business idea and stated that the biggest need for this service in Madison County is in Oneida. There are nine wooded acres behind the plaza that will be made available for dog walks after the Shanes clear some paths there. Shane said dogs must be at least 3 months old before they can be housed, and dogs over 6 months must be spayed or neutered. Updated vaccinations and proof of good health is required, and each dog is carefully screened to ensure that they play well with others. The cost is $20 per day for stays of seven hours or more, or $12 for six hours or less. Shane said her goal is to care for up to 60 dogs a day. She would employ one person for every 10 dog clients. The plaza, which has had a 40 percent vacancy rate in recent months, was an attractive location because of its low rent, Shane said. She was looking at various places and had already lined up customers before this location became available. "This facility actually fell into our lap," she said.
