Welcome to Shawsheen Animal Hospital

Shawsheen Animal Hospital is a full service veterinary hospital that focuses on preventative wellness and patient care. Because we are committed to providing the highest quality medicine and excellent customer service, we were awarded accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Society in March of 2007.

Our dedicated, friendly, and knowledgeable staff places equal emphasis on both animal welfare and client education. Our patients primarily include dogs and cats.

If you are interested in getting to know us better, please call to arrange a tour of our facility and meet our great staff!

About Us

Shawsheen Animal Hospital was founded in April of 2001 by Dr.'s Caruso and Leblanc. At that time they could only hire 1 staff member to help get this small practice off the ground. Within 1 year the practice had grown enough to support 3 full time staff members and that number has risen every year since.

In the 5 years we have been open; the hospital has been remodeled completely and redesigned to provide you with the utmost comfort along with state of the art facilities. Our trained and caring staff is here to provide the latest in preventative and progressive care available.

Drs Caruso and Leblanc have a dream to one day expand the hospital into a luxury boarding and grooming facility as well as a 24 hour emergency care hospital.

We would like to thank all of our wonderful and supportive clients who entrust us with their pet's well being. We could not have grown so much in such a short amount of time if it wasn't for all of you. Thank you for helping us achieve our dreams!

Comphrehensive Physical Examination

At Best Pets we believe that the Comphrehensive Physical Exam is the foundation of your pets' long term health. Your veterinarian is the only person in your four footed loved one's life that is specifically trained with the expertise to detect problems before they become overwhelming. Our focus on preventative maintenance allows us to show how you can best care for your pet, to avoid the unexpected surprise and sometimes costly measures that are needed when health problems become serious. A thorough comphrehensive physical examination at least annually is the most important step in tracking and maintaining health. Since pets age faster than humans, changes occur at a much more rapid pace and we can help you recognize, monitor and intervene early, before they become catastrophic or too costly to correct.

Vaccinations and Preventative Medicine

Pets today are living longer and healthier lives in part due to major advances in vaccine innovation that protect them from deadly infectious diseases. Over the years vaccines have saved millions of pets from dangerous and debilitating diseases. The sad fact however is that many diseases still pose a threat to those that are unprotected. Newly emerging diseases such as Lyme are on the rise in our area and Feline Leukemia still lurks in the shadows to afflict those that have become complacent or fearful of proper vaccination. Your veterinarian is still the best source of information about which vaccines will keep your pet healthy over time. Many factors will help us decide which vaccines are best for your pets needs. Most importantly, our primary goal at Best Pets is to protect the health of your pet and we are dedicated to the proven benefits of the 3 year distemper program and the use of non-adjuvanted vaccines to maximize protection while minimizing the potential for adverse reactions. Ask our staff today how to adopt this strategic program into your pets healthcare.

Puppy and Kitten Visits

At Best Pets Veterinary Hospital, we believe the best way to good health is to get started on the right path. Our puppy and kitten series is designed to evaluate all aspects of health that contribute to proper growth and development. Each visit with the veterinarian will chart the nutrition, behavior and maintenance needs to help you keep your pet healthy and safe. By addressing common issues with young growing puppies and kittens our staff expertise can help prevent many bigger consequences pets face as adults.

Spay and Neuter

The sad reality is that millions of animals are euthanized each year because there are no homes for them. Spaying and neutering not only saves lives, it can prevent serious health problems and increase your pets' life expectancy. Spaying a female eliminates the risk of several types of cancer and potentially life threatening uterine infections. Neutering eliminates prostate and testicular cancer and can reduce other unwanted behavior issues. Breeding your pet however wonderful they are puts their health at risk and often has a negative outcome. Show you really care for your dog and cat by having them spayed and neutered.

Parasite Prevention and Control

One of the biggest threat to your pets' health is exposure to parasites. Although there was a time when fleas, ticks and worms were just considered a nuisance, we are just now learning through extensive research about some of the damaging diseases parasites can transmit to both humans and their pets. Ticks can harbor bacteria that cause Lyme disease and fleas can transmit tapeworms and Bartonella in cats that is the leading cause of "cat-scratch" disease in humans. Another microscopic organism transmitted from mosquito bites can form worms that grow in your pets lungs and heart. Most of the parasites affecting pets are microscopic and detectable before they cause symptoms. It is absolutely crucial to test your pet regularly and do what you can to protect your children and your pets from parasites. Our educated staff can recommend a comprehensive program of testing and preventative measures that you can easily use at home.

In-House Laboratory

We are equipped with sophisticated instruments that allow us to measure many laboratory values.

As a compliment to our regular laboratory services, our in-house diagnostic capabilities allow us to get results pre-surgically, or in an emergency, within minutes.

Dental Care

Regular professional dental care is important to maintaining your pet's health. We use the most modern and safe ultrasonic scaler to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line. Then we polish the teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup in the future. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity. Proper dental care can prevent bad breath and periodontal infection from spreading throughout the bloodstream to damage your pet's major organs. Ask us to evaluate your pets' dental health.

Radiographs, also commonly referred to as X-rays can be an extremely valuable diagnostic tool for a variety of medical conditions seen in pets. We have a Universal low dose - machine always ready as a non-invasive way to diagnose varied conditions like arthritis or fractures of the bones, intestinal obstructions, bladder and kidney stones and early tumor detection. It is even safe enough to use on young and pregnant animals! We are pleased to offer expert radiology services as a means of providing excellent care through correct diagnosis of our patients.

Surgical Services

Our hospital is fully equipped to perform most surgical procedures from spay and neutering to tumor removal and wound management. Prior to surgery each patient recieves a thorough physical examination to identify any existing conditions that might influence anesthesia and recovery. Everyone wants the best outcome after a procedure and since not all problems can be detected on exam, we may suggest other pre-anesthetic screening to give us a more complete picture of internal health to allow us to adjust the safest anesthetic regime specifically to meet your pets needs.

Using state of the art inhalant machines and monitoring devices we can adjust the anesthesia based on cardiac, respiratory and blood pressure readings.

Pain management is a crucial part of our pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative plan. All surgical patients will receive the best combination of management suited to the procedure. For elective dental, spay and neuters this may include local nerve blocks, spinal infusions and peripheral numbing to minimize the potential for side effects. Our staff takes pain management serious and so should you, we will discuss any questions fully prior to any appointments to put you at ease with all procedures.

Nutritional Counseling

One of the greatest advances in pet health has come in the way of nutritional research. Many common health problems which were previously difficult to manage and potentially life threatening are now treatable through specially formulated foods. Diabetes, hyperthyroidism and urinary tract stone formation can often be controlled through diet alone. These measures tend to be easier and more cost effective than most other options. Best Pets Vet offers these and other nutritional services to optimize your pets' health and prevent disease in the future. Choosing the proper nutrition each stage in your pets' life is key to good health.

Behavior Counseling

Your pets' behavior ultimately defines the relationship you will have on a daily basis. At Best Pets, our goal is to make your pet the best he or she can be and we understand that your pets' behavior will greatly affect both their and your quality of life. Many behavior problems can be prevented through training and modification plans. Our goal is to avoid the frustration that can result from common behavior problems such as fear, separation anxiety and inappropriate elimination which often lead to devastating consequences. A well-adjusted pet and their family will lead a happier healthier life! Scheduling an evaluation with a professional skilled in managing behavior problems is the first step in resolving the situation and strengthening the bond with your companion.

Senior Care and Screening

In recent years, great strides have been made in recognizing the special needs and requirements of our "senior citizen" dogs and cats. Our veterinarians are well equipped with the knowledge and diagnostic tools to identify age related problems and formulate realistic strategies to allow our pets to live longer and healthier lives. If your dog is seven to nine years of age or older (depending on breed) or your cat is ten years of age or older, it is now in its geriatric years. We will be happy to discuss with you our recommendations for care and nutrition. Often the most simple solution to address the pain of arthritis, difficulty maintaining ideal weight and incontinence can slow the progression of these common ailments. Call Best Pets today to see if your pet could benefit from such screening.

Pet Identification and Microchip System

A microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size and shape of a grain of rice. It is implanted beneath a pet's skin between the shoulder blades, and stays there for the pet's entire life. This procedure is as easy and as painless as a vaccination.

Each microchip has a unique number. This number, along with information about the owner and pet, are added to a national pet registry. Most veterinary hospitals and animal shelters have electronic scanners for detecting and reading these implanted microchips. If a lost pet is found and a microchip is scanned the registry is called and the owner can be contacted.

We stock an extensive drug inventory so medications can be dispensed before leaving the clinic.

End of Life and Bereavement Support

Sometimes the final gift you can give your pet is to ease their transition from persistent pain or suffering. Choosing the right end of life care is the most difficult task a loving family will ever face. Best Pets is wholy committed to incorporating the most progressive hospice care available to ensure that you and your pet are provided with the comfort and dignity needed during this difficult time. Our staff has the experience to help you determine how best to maintain your pet's quality of life and if needed to decide when is the right time to let them go peacefully. We can help you navigate these decisions with the utmost compassion and respect for you and your pets' needs. Call if you need to discuss this and we can assist in evaluating your beloved companion to choose the most appropriate care.

Behavior Counseling

Behavioral problems are the number one reason pets are taken to animal shelters. If you are experiencing a behavioral problem with your pet we offer examinations, counseling, behavior modification programs, and sometimes drug therapy to help resolve the issue. We can also refer you to veterinarians specializing in behavior medicine as the situation warrants.
