The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) advocates the humane treatment of companion animals through leadership and proactive solutions to pet overpopulation, including adoptions, education and spay/neuter efforts. KHS is dedicated to making Louisville and surrounding areas a better place for our four-legged friends and the people who love them. KHS is one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in the nation and Louisville's only private, non-profit animal agency that is also open admissions, choosing to accept all dogs and cats in need. Already known as the state’s largest animal adoption agency, in the last 10 years, KHS has expanded its programs into dozens of counties to become the area’s number one resource for pets and pet services. KHS is the oldest and largest animal welfare agency in the state thanks to private supporters.

From their website: LouisvilleMetro Animal Services' Animal Care Center receives an Metro Animal Servicesaverage of over 14,000 animals annually. Thousands are brought to our shelter as a result of service requests from the community and many are surrendered by their owners. Metro Animal Services employs 17 Animal Control Officers who investigate over 24,000 complaints in an average year that range from bite cases to severe inhumane treatment. They drive over 225,000 miles a year covering Louisville Metro's 386 sq. miles. Officers are on duty from 7 am to 11 pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including holidays. Besides enforcing the Louisville Metro Animal Care and Control Ordinance, the center has a 9-person animal care staff that includes a veterinarian, two veterinary technicians, and two adoption coordinators. The animal care staff spends countless hours caring for the animals at our facility. Many of these animals are placed for adoption through our adoption program or transferred to placement organizations. Adoptable animals can be viewed on this website (see Meet Adoptable Animals) or at the Animal Care Center. Adoption hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 am - 5 pm, Tuesday and Thursday 10 am - 6 pm, and Wednesday and Friday 10 am - 7 pm. Regular office hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 am - 5 pm. The Animal Care Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to care for and accept animals.
