Videos We Love: ‘Breading’ Your Cat Really Was a Thing

It's Friday, so let's put bread on our cats' faces and have a harmless laugh at their expense!

Angela Lutz  |  Aug 7th 2015

A couple of years ago it became inexplicably fashionable to cut a sand dollar-sized piece from the center of some Wonder Bread and affix the slice to your kitty’s head, kind of like a spongy, white frame around her stupidly cute face.

Much like what we do to mushrooms before we deep-fat fry them, we called the trend “breading,” and just like the cat beard, everyone on the internet had to try it — often with hilarious results. Oftentimes the affected feline would sit there stunned before attempting to back out of the yeasty ensnarement.

Since it’s Friday, I’ve decided to revisit this most adorable and baffling of trends with the following videos. Have you breaded your cat? If so, share pictures in the comments! (Note: Breading can be confusing to cats, so do not leave recently breaded cats unattended, and after you’ve had a good giggle, help them out of their headgear.)

1. ‘Pure-bread’ wonders

The cats’ reactions in this compilation vary widely. For some, this act is obviously planting the seed of murderous rage; others could care less and would probably be fine going about their day with a dang piece of bread on their face.

2. A very real threat

This video’s ominous music and sharp angles make bread seem like an action movie villain who is trying to create a populace that does nothing but sit around looking completely dumbfounded.

3. Bread that cat!

The trend even spawned a ridiculous computer game called Bread That Cat, in which you must, um, bread as many cats as possible as they fly out from behind the sofa. Watch this woman demo the game in this weirdly hypnotic video.

4. Bad Mr. Kitty!

On “South Park,” Cartman’s kitty put bread on his own face and created his own memes to get back at the man. Good job, Mr. Kitty! Speaking of which, I shudder to think of the memes my own cats would make, but they would definitely mock my tendency to stay up until 1 a.m. on a weeknight watching “Law & Order.”

5. How to bread a cat

It starts off slow, but by the end of this dude’s how-to tutorial on cat breading, he’s kind of won me over. Pretty sure his “super cuddly” cat is going to kill him later though.
