Maxie the Cat has a Happy Christmas in his future after spending a terrible few weeks trapped inside a wall cavity of the Barnstaple Liberal Club in North Devon (UK). The six-year-old cat was rescued by club member Justin Barrow.
Members of the club had heard the cat yowling for more than two weeks, but assumed it was a vocal neighborhood cat. Barrow became concerned when the yowls became increasingly faint and sounded more distressed. He and a club worker investigated and found Maxie trapped inside a wall. They contacted the North Devon Animal Ambulance (NDAA) for assistance.
Dehydrated and extremely emaciated, Maxie is recovering in the special care unit of the NDAA. Despite his profound weight loss, Maxie was deemed otherwise healthy.
Diana Lewis of the NDAA guesses that Maxie only survived by eating dead pigeons which had also been trapped inside the wall cavity.
But the story doesn’t end there. Barrow went beyond the call of duty and tracked down Maxie’s owners after he spotted a “missing” poster in town and recognized the cat.
Owners Tim and Helen Fowler said Maxie had gone missing in October and the family had almost given up hope of finding him.
“They contacted me and came to check it was really him,” Mrs Lewis said. “Maxie’s still very thin, but he’s got a clean bill of health.
“I’m so pleased because he’ll be back with his family for Christmas, so it’s a very happy ending.”
