Jean Jullien Mixes Cats, People, and Art With the Real World

The artist's simple line drawings of cats are bursting with feline character.

As is the case with most good wormholes, I cannot remember exactly how I came across the artist Jean Jullien’s Instagram page, but I’m mightily happy that I stumbled into his corner of the Internet. He’s an illustrator with a very simple but bold style based around thick, black outlines. His images usually charm with their wry sense of humor.

Oh, and cats.

You see, the feline form is a recurring muse for Jean, as demonstrated by this selection of images and illustrations.

One of Jean’s favorite art tricks is to take an everyday object and illustrate around it so that it forms part of a totally different object. Here we’ve got a classic black cat who looks like he’s been caught in the middle of some mischievous act.

Using the same concept, it’s time to introduce yourself to Lemon Cat. He’s an acquired taste, tart and sometimes astringent if you’re not used to his particular brand of humor.

Now it’s time to get familiar with Office Cat, a vital addition to any self-respecting modern workplace.

Apparently, Jean himself is allergic to cats. It’s less of an issue if you’re a talented artist who’s able to draw and cut out a miniature version of yourself to enable sneeze-free cat naps with any nearby felines.

This selection is titled The Skinny Cats of Ithaka, which I’m guessing was inspired by a trip to the series’ namesake Greek island. Star billing goes to the black kitty just to the right of the bottom fold, who’s gotten himself into all sorts of contorted shenanigans.

I’m a big fan of most of Hayao Miyazaki’s animated movies. Here Jean’s grouped together a bunch of the auteur’s most recognizable characters, including Jiji, the black cat from Kiki’s Delivery Service.

Too late for Valentine’s Day, but this is apparently the official universal symbol for cat lovers.

And now let’s finish with a pun. Here we have Like A Cat On A Hot Tin Roof
