Recently, a kayaker on Boston's Charles River made a gruesome discovery along the river's bank: a pet carrier almost completely submerged in the water, with an orange tabby thrashing furtively inside of it.

He rescued the cat and took her to the Massachusetts SPCA's Animal Care and Adoption Center where she was nicknamed Grandma Moses (see photo above). MSPCA warmed up the cat and fed her. She's expected to make a full and speedy recovery from her ordeal.

The MSPCA is now investigating the case. Abandonment constitutes animal cruelty in Massachusetts and perpetrators may receive a fine of up to $2,500 or five years in prison.
