See a Cat Leap Off Your Screen in a Mind-Blowing 3D Cat GIF

Split-depth GIFs trick the brain into thinking that 3D action is taking place, as this cow-cat file shows.

Animated cat GIFs are marvelous. But do you sometimes get the feeling that maybe you’ve seen them all, whether it’s cats giving out high-fives or engaging in spectacular athletic failures? Well, prepare yourself for the next frontier in animated antics.

The technical boffins of the world call them split-depth GIFs, and one of a recent batch that took over the Internet can lay claim to being without qualification the single most impressive animated cat GIF to ever have been conceived. Behold the greatness below and then we’ll try and explain just how it looks like that dapper cow cat is literally jumping up and out of your screen (and stomping on the comments section to boot).

Suitably wowed?

Okay, so here goes with the behind-the-curtains stuff. Split-depth GIFs work by the canny use of those white bars sectioning up the image — which in turn manage to fool the humble human brain into thinking that the subject of the GIF has actually broken through some sort of matrix and is moving through another dimension of Internet entertainment.

Right now there are a bunch of split-depth GIFs peppering up Tumblr, with movie scenes and superheroes being favorite foils. Animals are of course represented too, including this freaky Cheshire cat.

And we’ll end today’s GIF guide with a sterling piece of big cat action. Duck down!
