When I was preparing the nursery for our little girl, I didn’t expect my cat Toby would be interested in much except maybe the burlap ribbon that hung from her crib. in the midst of diapers, wipes, books, and stuffed animals, Toby found love — a small white cat that was given to me over a decade ago by my best friend.
This is my cat’s letter to his favorite toy:
It’s a mystery how I found you, Great White Beauty of my dreams. A room once claimed by us four-legged creatures was mysteriously transformed, glossy wood taking the place of aged carpet, peculiarly small clothing, and the Great Brown Tower on which I found you. In a burlap bag, no less, your whiskers barely peeked over the edge. I courted you for months, though I’m not sure you noticed. I would groom myself so neatly, then strut by your bag house. You were so very quiet that I decided you must be shy. Surely there could be no other reason why you would turn your nose up at the many kills I have places beneath your resting place, including my beloved and bedraggled Squeaky Bird.
One day, I saw why you refused my advances. You were a prisoner! Sitting around you like great guardians was a large rabbit with beady eyes, a bear with unusual fur, and a large sphere with frightening patterns. You were a damsel in distress! I investigated the situation as best I could from a distance. I practiced my stealth attacks by stalking the larger humans’ ankles. I worked to increase my speed by racing through the house, particularly at odd hours. It was best to keep the Guardians on their toes.
I knew I was ready the day I stole a piece of yarn right out of one of the larger human’s hands. My speed, my agility would be unmatched! Still, I must be cautious. Oh, my love, how my paws ached to hold you! But patient I must be. I waited until the time was right, when the sun was high and blinding the Guardians’ beady eyes, and I made my move. In one swift motion, I seized you by the scruff and launched you out of the burlap bag. ATTACK!! The beady-eyed Guardians were upon us! I almost lost my footing as I carried you to safety, but, my dear, we escaped!
I tucked you away in the lower realm of the cat tree as I stalked back towards the room. The Guardians were still there, but not moving. Still, I waited. I sat, and I watched them. Finally satisfied that they were expired, or at least without effort to chase us any longer, I went back to the hiding place in the cat tree. Alas, you were even more beautiful than I remembered! I groomed your fur, and, though you were silent, I knew you loved me, too. We slumbered in the twilight, together at last. When morning came, I stretched, reaching for your not-so-warm fur. MISSING!! Where could you be?
Terrified for your safety, I rushed into the room to the Great Brown Tower, just in time to see one of the larger humans placing you betwixt the Guardians once more. CONSPIRACY!! My feelings of betrayal were beyond expression. I yowled my discontent and proceeded to plan your escape once more. This pattern repeated for weeks until at last, I had to admit defeat.
Still, I love you dearly, Great White Beauty. Your silence only adds to your mystery, and I shall again rescue you, when I’m sure the Guardians and the humans can be caught unawares. Until then, my love, rest easy and know that your devoted knight awaits.
Yours truly and cattingly,
Does your cat have a favorite toy she seems to be friends with? What do they do together? What makes the toy so special? Let us know in the comments.
