Kittens demand tremendous amounts of energy. Once weaned, they should receive a high-quality food tailored to their needs. Such products contain roughly 35 percent protein, 12 to 24 percent fat, and about one-fourth more calories than fuel that is formulated for adults. The food should be provided several times a day, or left in the kitten enclosure so the felines can "free feed" (there is little chance that kittens will become obese). Supplemental "wet" food can also be provided once or twice a day.
Kittens who sample several different products may grow up to be less finicky eaters; however, too much variety may cause stomach upset. Continue feeding kitten food until the feline is 9 months old or has reached 80 to 90 percent of its probable adult weight (consult your veterinarian). Then gradually switch to an adult-formulated product. (See Modifying Diet.) Do not give vitamins or other supplements to kittens without consulting your veterinarian. Be sure the kitten has access to fresh water throughout the day.
CAUTION: Because kittens' nutritional needs are very exact, developing a regimen of homemade food is in most cases not practical. Even minor imbalances can have devastating consequences. For instance, a taurine deficiency can cause blindness.
The Cat Owner's Manual is a basic guide to cat care. The book was written by a celebrated veterinarian and an acclaimed author. It provides cat owners with well-researched and helpful information presented in a lighthearted manner. The creators chose to write the book in a style similar to what you'd find in "operating instructions" for a car or computer. Of course they--and we--respect the fact that our beloved pets are not products or machines!
