Kittens demand tremendous amounts of energy. Once weaned, they should receive a high-quality food tailored to their needs. Such products contain roughly 35 percent protein, 12 to 24 percent fat, and about one-fourth more calories than fuel that is formulated for adults. The food should be provided several times a day, or left in the kitten enclosure so the felines can "free feed" (there is little chance that kittens will become obese). Supplemental "wet" food can also be provided once or twice a day. Kittens who sample several different products may grow up to be less finicky eaters; however, too much variety may cause stomach upset. Continue feeding kitten food until the feline is 9 months old or has reached 80 to 90 percent of its probable adult weight (consult your veterinarian). Then gradually switch to an adult-formulated product. (See Modifying Diet.) Do not give vitamins or other supplements to kittens without consulting your veterinarian. Be sure the kitten has access to fresh water throughout the day.
