Grooming Techniques for Longhaired Cats

Many longhaired breeds require 15 to 30 minutes of daily attention. Otherwise, they develop painful mats in their coats. (See Removing Mats.)

    Techniques for Grooming Longhaired Cats
  1. Use the wide-tooth side of a double-sided comb to clear tangles. Once this is accomplished, switch to the fine-tooth comb and repeat.
  2. Use a wire brush to remove dead hair. The feline's posterior quadrant will yield the most abundant supply.
  3. Run the fine-tooth comb through the hair in an upward direction (from the tail toward the head) to increase the coat's volume.
  4. Use a toothbrush to groom facial hair. Do not use the brush near the eyes.
  5. Repeat step 3 with the wide-tooth comb, in order to help the hair stand up.

Quirk BooksThe Cat Owner's Manual is a basic guide to cat care.
The book was written by a celebrated veterinarian and an acclaimed author. It provides cat owners with well-researched and helpful information presented in a lighthearted manner. The creators chose to write the book in a style similar to what you'd find in "operating instructions" for a car or computer. Of course they--and we--respect the fact that our beloved pets are not products or machines!
