Do not be concerned if you periodically hear a low-decibel hum emanating from your unit. This is not a malfunction, but a way for your feline to communicate everything from contentment to distress. Experts are not sure how the sound is produced. One theory suggests that the purr originates from a large vein that passes through the diaphragm. The feline may cause it to vibrate via muscle contractions, producing the distinctive sound.
Purring is most useful for mothers and newborn kittens. A mother may purr to let her initially blind and deaf offspring know where she is, and kittens purr (they begin at one week of age) to assure their mother that all is well. Cats purr while interfacing with humans to indicate their contentment or, sometimes, to ask for help. For instance, injured and/or sick cats may purr long and loudly, perhaps as a plea for assistance.
The Cat Owner's Manual is a basic guide to cat care. The book was written by a celebrated veterinarian and an acclaimed author. It provides cat owners with well-researched and helpful information presented in a lighthearted manner. The creators chose to write the book in a style similar to what you'd find in "operating instructions" for a car or computer. Of course they--and we--respect the fact that our beloved pets are not products or machines!
