Intro: Cat Litter Box Training

One of the cat's strongest selling points is the fact that it is largely a self-cleaning unit. The feline washes and combs its own fur and is also hardwired not only to eliminate bodily wastes in one convenient location, but to also conceal the material. In most cases adult cats come preprogrammed for litter box use. House-training is simply a matter of showing them where the box is located, then making sure they use it. Kittens have an inborn propensity for burying their waste—a propensity that is reinforced and refined when the kitten observes its mother. Given these facts, "teaching" this technique to a newly adopted kitten may be unnecessary. Simply place a litter box in the room that serves as its initial home and observe. If it doesn't use the unit on its own, then make a point of placing it in the container whenever it seems about to download. (The kitten will squat and raise its tail.) Carefully clean "accident" areas, because cats reuse spots they have previously visited.

expert tipEXPERT TIP: Ideally there should be one litter box on every level of your home, or one more than the total number of cats you possess.

Mama cats that are trained to go to the litter box wil also teach their kittens to go to the litter box. My aunt has a cat that had a litter of kittens. I witnessed the cat picking up her kitten son and placing him in the litter box before he was about to do his duty. Before long all the kittens were litter box trained.

Quirk BooksThe Cat Owner's Manual is a basic guide to cat care.
The book was written by a celebrated veterinarian and an acclaimed author. It provides cat owners with well-researched and helpful information presented in a lighthearted manner. The creators chose to write the book in a style similar to what you'd find in "operating instructions" for a car or computer. Of course they--and we--respect the fact that our beloved pets are not products or machines!
