Recommended Cat Accessories, Part II

Comb and/or Brush: Longhaired cats require a fine-tooth comb, bristle brush, wire brush, and perhaps a toothbrush (for facial grooming). Short-haired felines need a fine-tooth comb, soft bristle brush, rubber brush, and (optional) a chamois cloth.

Cat Brushes and Combs

Cat CollarCollar/Tags: Put a lightweight collar on your new cat or kitten, along with a tag containing its name and (at least) your telephone number, as soon as you acquire the feline. Add tags for appropriate vaccinations as soon as your cat receives them. A "breakaway" collar, which detaches if the cat catches it on an obstruction, is a mandatory safety feature. (See Collars and Tags.)

Internal Parasites: HeartwormWater/Food Bowls: Each cat should have its own set. Stainless steel is an excellent choice (ceramic versions are fragile, and some felines have allergic reactions to the plastic ones). Make sure the bowl is wide enough so that the cat's whiskers do not flatten against the sides of its face (they find this unpleasant). Position the bowls in a quiet area. If you also own a dog, make sure the canine cannot access them.

Cat CarrierCarrying Case: Select a model with a metal grate and a high-impact plastic body. These are essential for transporting felines.

Quirk BooksThe Cat Owner's Manual is a basic guide to cat care.
The book was written by a celebrated veterinarian and an acclaimed author. It provides cat owners with well-researched and helpful information presented in a lighthearted manner. The creators chose to write the book in a style similar to what you'd find in "operating instructions" for a car or computer. Of course they--and we--respect the fact that our beloved pets are not products or machines!
