Adult Cats and Children

Before exposing children to the cat, be sure they understand that the unit will defend itself if it feels threatened or otherwise put-upon. Teach them the proper method for holding a cat. (See How to Hold a Cat.)

  • A "formal introduction" may not be necessary. If the children are mature and patient enough not to press the issue, the feline can meet them on its own terms, during its daily rounds.
  • If a formal introduction is required, entice the cat into playing with the children by using a ball. However, do not let the play become too frenetic.
  • Instruct the children not to allow the feline to attack their extremities, even in play.
  • Discourage children from interfacing with the cat while it eats or sleeps. The cat will not react in a dangerous way to such invasions, but it will find them unsettling.
  • Children should postpone aggressive petting, hugging, and/or holding until the cat seems comfortable with them.
  • Do not allow children to tug on the cat's tail. Also, discourage them from petting its stomach. This is a sensitive area.
  • If the cat decides to end an encounter by walking away, teach your children to accept this verdict and refrain from following the feline.
  • If possible, keep the cat's food and water bowls, litter box, and sleeping area out of the path of children.

Quirk BooksThe Cat Owner's Manual is a basic guide to cat care.
The book was written by a celebrated veterinarian and an acclaimed author. It provides cat owners with well-researched and helpful information presented in a lighthearted manner. The creators chose to write the book in a style similar to what you'd find in "operating instructions" for a car or computer. Of course they--and we--respect the fact that our beloved pets are not products or machines!
