Behavior & Training > Cat won't cover up her waste!!!

| Purred: Thu Jun 10, '10 1:40pm PST | | | | | I have 2 cats and none of them covers their business. I don't have any smell though because they are on raw diet. Santana is a whole male, so sometimes his pee stinks if I pass litterbox right after he went. I got littermate litter additive (http://www.littermate.com/) and it definitely works purrrfect. It is expensive but it lasts forever and probably would worth the money if my cats weren't on raw diet and I had the odor problems.
I use Fresh Step litter but with littermate breeders usually get the cheapest litter, it really makes wonders with litter.

Choosing the Right Cat > Allergy Concern (Russian Blue)

| Purred: Fri May 21, '10 12:48pm PST | | | | | As another poster said here it's not hair but saliva. I have 2 persian cats and I bathe them often and they hardly ever groom themselves- I do it for them . My friends who are allergic to cats can pet my cats as long as they want and be around them without even thinking of any allergic reactions.
I bath my cats in kitchen sink using sprayer and I have special Metro blowdryer that dries their coats really fast (but doesn't dry out their hair). Show baths are another story but just regular baths are easy and do not take much time or efforts. And my persians have tons of coat!

| Purred: Fri May 21, '10 11:06am PST | | | | | Oh, I sure agree with previous poster about getting all knots and matts out before bathing, did this mistake once with my cream smoke with extremely long cottony coat... it was terrible .
Also, if you decide to bath a cat don't forget to trim his nails . Even with my mellow persians who were showed and got bathed twice a week for a year or so accidential scratches on my skin happen if I forget to trim their nails.

| Purred: Sun Feb 28, '10 11:44am PST | | | | | Back to Premiers/Champions and why people show cats in Premiership - hey, we totally forgot the reason "DM"!!!
DM - Distinguished Merit - an extremely high and honorable title for a female who produced 5 grand off-springs and male who produced 15 grand off-springs.
Just yesterday a breeder showed a very nice cat in premiership, and the new owners couldn't wait for this boy to grand but they had to wait. The breeder needed one more grand for DM title to her female, and a good way to do it is neuter/spay some good kittens and grand them in premiership and then place in a pet home. It is still easier to grand a premier than to grand a whole...

| Purred: Fri Feb 26, '10 8:04am PST | | | | | You are such a cutie!
I got Julian when he was 3 months old and was on kibbles, just offered him meat and was done with conversion . Santana came to me at the age of 7.5 months, he only had RC Persian dry food before, nothing else. I offered him his RC dry and I put meat in Julian's dish... Santana immediately cleaned up Julian's plate and asked for more and after that he wouldn't touch any commercial food under no circumstances, Julian would but not Santana.
None of them had any poop issues or anything like that.
Hope you'll have as many "problems" with transition to raw as I did
Good luck to you! | | | | |

| Purred: Wed Feb 24, '10 8:16pm PST | | | | | Since salmonella came up... In the wild most birds have salmonella, cats eats birds and never get sick.
Cat's digestive system is short, simple and very highly acidic. Also, cat's saliva has special enzyme (sorry I don't remember the name) that kills most of bacteries in his mouth. It takes around 4 hours or so to digest poultry or meat and it takes around 20 hours for salmonella to grow and multiply.
The thing is that since commercial food contains lots of stuff like grains, veggies, rice etc. that cat can't digest, it takes 12+ (sorry I am not good in numbers) hours to digest it. If the owner fed raw chicken with salmonella after dry food, there is a slight chance that salmonella has enough time to grow and develop.
Many vets do not know that not because they are not good vets (they may be fantastic vets) but simply because they didn't teach this at school and they are not supposed to be feline nutritionists (unless they are, off course, MOL). We do not expect any doctor to be heart specialist or nerve specialist, why would be expect a vet to be a nutritionist? Just because so many people think that vets "supposed to know"? And remember, many cats died from commercial food recommended by vets, one just needs to google for pet food recall and there will be plenty of details...
Commercial pet food industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, so obviously they are not interested in promoting any other diet than commercial. Nobody really wants to harm cats health , it's simply about top $$$$ in the first place, the rest is secondary.

| Purred: Wed Feb 24, '10 11:39am PST | | | | | It's my belief, and I may be wrong, that some purebred cats in general have weaker health than domestic mixes. What may work excellent for mixes (and I love ALL cats, hope nobody gets me wrong here), may not work as well for purebreds. It's generalization off course but I'm sure there is at least part of truth in it.
I know some DSH/DLH lived till 20+ on just dry food but I'm not sure about purebreds. Anyway, I don't think there is any statistics or research, so it's just what "I think".
I took holistic approach with my cats - raw diet, no vaccinations, fresh air (on the balcony in a tent/cage), healthy stressfree lifestyle - lots of playing, running, having fun etc. Seems like it works excellent for my cats but fingers crossed.
But no doubt I totally respect the right of each owner to take different from mine approach.

In the US I think the most "loud" ring that has most public is Household Pets - and I personally just LOVE that although I never had/showed HHP. But it's fun to watch and it's becoming more and more popular and I know at one big show in Southern California the count for HHP exceeded 45 or so.

I don't think I am allowed to promote raw diet here, otherwise I do have a lot to say . And mine a picky eaters too - they both won't eath anything but raw, and not one type of meat 2 days in a row, and not meat that spent over a day in fridge (not in freezer), and... oh, well, at least I am trying to be a good persian servant, MOL.
