Raw Food Diet > Has anyone ever offered their cat live prey?

I don't have to feed my cats live prey. They hunt and eat it and sometimes offer it to me. Yes, I save snakes, lizards, and chipmunks if I can distract the cats long enough. big grin

It is perfectly natural for a cat to shed whiskers just like fur. There was a couple profiled in "Must Love Cats" that collected all the fallen cat whiskers and, man, did they have a stack.

I do find them on the sofa, my chair, on the floor, under the table. It is just like our hair falling out and since your baby is strong and healthy, I would not worry about it.

I can't really add any help to your question but I can tell you that the vets here are notifing pet caregivers that no brand of flea/tick prevention is working this season. The stupid bugs are resistant to it this year. Now we do live in an extremely rural part of TN so our situation is not necessarily yours.

Cat Health > Water fountains - my solution?

Hey, y'all.

Please don't shout at me.

Having as many cats as I do, we burn out a lot of water fountains. Soooo I came up with my own solution to oxygenated water. I use the smallest aquarium (think fish tank) I can find, get tubing, a small rubber gripper thingy (you can find them with the fish tank stuff) and set it all up in a large bowl. Then fill it. Viola!

I know that most of them use water filters but in my own defense, we have a filter installed before it even hits the house. We have own spring that feeds our house and is coveted by many. It also has sediment that I need to filter out (duh me) but it is so gooood.

Anywho, that is my commentary.

Use DE (human grade Diatomaceous Earth). It is cheap (very cheap especially compared to commercial chemical flea/tick controls), totally effective and natural.

You can get it from a feed store or a local co-op. You just press you hands into it, tap them off and then rub it in the cat's fur BACKWARDS and within 24-36 hours all fleas are dead. You can do this as many times as you feel necessary - mega daily if you want. You can also sprinkle some in the places the cats sleep, etc. AND you can feed it to them to kill internal parasites. Oh, it works for dogs too. So if you are just "petting" the cats, this will do quite well for you.

I have lots of cats and dogs and this is what I and - well, it just works better and there are no issues with it. It is totally unobtrusive if you know what I mean. wink

I have this trick that I do when I bring in a new cat or a cat(s) back from the vet. I bump each cats nose with a cotton ball tipped with vanilla. That way they all "smell" the same. Works for us.

Hey, I never said I was normal. big grin

Raw Food Diet > Fleas and Ticks - have you noticed...?

OK, to all my rawfeeders out there - have you noticed a LACK o fleas and ticks on your rawfed furrballs? I sure have.

After this last episode with Rags and Lyme Disease (in the Cat Health subforum) I examined all my furrballs with a fine tooth comb. Literally. And there is nary a flea, tick or any parasite on their uber healthy bodies. Now I live in the foothills of the Smoky Mnts and ticks are rampant this time of wet year so suffice to say, I was shocked (pleasantly so) at the lack of nasties.

Anyone got anything they care to share? Please?
