"A two-year research project conducted at the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition in Leicestershire, England indicates that healthy pet cats regulate their nutrient intake to mimic what they would eat in the wild.

The study demonstrated kitties have a daily calorie ‘intake target’ that is equal to 52 percent protein, 36 percent fat and 12 percent carbohydrate.

According to lead study author Dr. Adrian Hewson-Hughes:

“This is a fascinating discovery and we are intrigued to know more about why cats have the ability to do this. It is particularly remarkable that, even after thousands of years of domestication, cats still select a diet nutritionally similar to their natural prey.”"

Cat Health > Cat Nip Not Recommended?

Update:

She states that she doesn't think it's harmful but compares it to a parent giving a child alcohol to watch him/her stumble around... She also states that it makes some cats aggressive. She just doesn't seem to like the reason as to why cat owners give their cats catnip. I give my cats 'nip because it seems to make them happy. lol Watching them act silly is just a bonus.

What a weird reason for not liking cat nip... Cat nip is completely harmless but alcohol to a child is dangerous... It's an odd comparison.

I just sent her an email. Hopefully I'll get a reply sometime tomorrow.

$10 says she gives me the "Come speak to me in class and we'll discuss further."

I hate when teachers do that. lol

I've been reading around and haven't really found anything that says catnip is bad.

This site states it's comparable to LSD but it's the only site I've found that says this. http://www.essortment.com/catnip-herb-can-delight-fright-41551.html

Why is bone meal considered "not real bone" when it's made from cattle bones?

And would this be suitable? I can only get this at holistic food stores.

A lot of the other students seem a little... put off when she said that. I may send her an email and I imagine a couple other students might as well.

I'm sitting in my Animal Wellness class and my professor just said that catnip is a hallucinogen and wouldn't recommend giving it to cats. Also said "Just because they like it doesn't mean it's not bad for them".

I was just reading about catnip just the other day and came to the conclusion that it was not harmful for cats who are affected by it unless they become aggressive.

Thoughts?
