Cat Health > can smoking around your cat cause it cancer?

The original poster to this thread asked if smoking around her cats could cause lung cancer. And people were kind of enough to take the time and let her know that it can. Of course she can take the time to google this information herself instead of us looking up links. But it is a well known fact that it can cause problems. Smoking isnt healthy for anyone. Even if you don't notice problems, the cats could be uncomfortable and have a harder time breathing. Why would you want to do that to them?

My mom is very sensitive to second hand smoke. Her Dad smoked and died in his middle 50's. He was always told by his doctors that smoking would kill him and it did. Very sad. Mom is that age now and realizes how young that really is.

I know it is very hard to stop smoking. It is an addiction, a crutch. And smokers always seem to be very defensive of their habit.

It is totally a person's choice if they smoke. But I do think one has to think twice about it and how they are doing it when it is effecting other people or pets instead of just not caring. Like their smoking so much more important to them. I would not want to see any cat in discomfort so I would do what I could to make sure they were living in a healthy environment.

Pets can come down with cancers such as oral cancers and lung cancer from living with smokers or from second hand smoke. I read that they are even more sensitive to smoke than humans are.

Asthma is something to be very concerned with for pets trying to breathe but breathing in second hand smoke. Third hand smoke which is smoke you bring in on your clothes or settle on things can be just as dangerous as second hand smoke.

Your pets can't tell you that they are having trouble breathing until it has gotten bad enough that you notice. They have no choice. You control the air they breathe.

I would take him to a different vet for another opinion. Many vets will reach out to other professionals they know to see if they have ever come across a problem like this.

Paws across you find out what is wrong or someone else here has some better advice for you.

It sounds like Pippie would love to have a fursibling to play with!! Dad and Mom had only one cat before us and when she passed at almost 19 years old they wanted to make sure to get 2 cats so they got me and Zoey. We have so much fun together!!

Zoey and I just started adding Blue Buffalo Wilderness canned turkey and canned chicken to our rotation. We love it and Mom said it seems like a very healthy food with no grains, high protein and low carbs. Very tasty!

When we were kittens we ate the canned Wellness for Kittens. If Mom would have known then about the Blue Buffalo Wilderness canned for kittens she would have fed that to us too.

How exciting for you and your Mom, Bandit!

Mom doesn't have any experience with flying with pets or relocating pets. But here is a carrier to check out:

The Sleepy Pod Air

Cat Weight up to 17.5lb

Meets major airline carry-on pet regulations by being able to compress in length from 22" to 19" when one side is compressed, or 16" when both sides are compressed.
Expanded 22×10.5×10.5"

Compressed 16×10×8"

There is a whole page of info in the link above. Hope this can work out for you!

For a bit we ate this food. We liked all the flavors really well and Mom liked that it came in small cans but Mom stopped feeding it to us and she can't remember why exactly. She had been trying a few brands and stopped this one. I know that is no help though.

Brownie had asked if you tried the Natures Variety food and we really like their Natures Variety Instinct canned Chicken.

If you could get someone to just come once - maybe on the 3rd day to just check to make sure they are ok, not stuck somewhere etc and fill their waters up, I think that would be good. Maybe even scoop out the litter. It is hard when you just move to a new place.

There might be petsitter companies in your area. My son has someone come in for 1/2 hour a day or so whenever they are gone to put out food, scoop litter and fill the water. It has always worked out well.

I like Maizy's idea of the block of ice. But still 5 days is a long time without any check on her at all. Will she space out her food or will she eat it all in the beginning?

That is a good question BK on what happens to the bone when it is freeze dried! I think I am just going to skip. Thank you both for your help.

I think I put this in the wrong forum as it isn't raw food. Sorry about that!
