I don't know if it's a troubling behavior or not, but it sounds a lot better than most of my cats--arch, hiss, growl...

| Purred: Sat Oct 3, '09 9:24pm PST | | | | | | My daughter was feeding Maynard some really cheap food; don't even know what it was. I picked up Wysong's kitten/cat food; I think it's called Nurture ("for younger, growing cats") and it seemed to cut down on the gas. His stool is firmer and he doesn't need to eat as much. HIs coat has also gotten richer. He's about the same age as your kitty. | | | | |

That one always got "retrieved". I had a cat that thought a piece of dog kibble was a great hockey puck -- until she saw you watching her. Then she would get all embarrassed and stalk off. A couple of pieces of cooked spaghetti noodle were one cat's fave.

I laugh so hard when I watch them that Maynard and my SIL's lab Molly start to back out of the room -- crazy hooman.

Food & Nutrition > Is cottage cheese ok for cats?

| Purred: Mon Sep 28, '09 6:15pm PST | | | | | | While kitties might like cottage cheese I found it usually makes their poop stinky, or stinkier than usual. I also have had cats that could not tolerate ANY dairy, so be careful. If they start to vomit do not give them any more. My first kitty almost died from lactose intolerance. My step father insisted on giving her pet milk to help in her digestion. Of course she wound up with incessant vomitng & diarrhea. | | | | |

| Purred: Fri Sep 18, '09 12:01pm PST | | | | | | We move every 8 weeks or so for our job. Maynard also goes to the park, even outdoor cafes, in the car during the week. He also drives to and from work with us. The log trips, 8 - 10 hours, are hard. We don't let him run loose in the car because he thinks the best place to lay is the dash. And Alex's lap, while he's driving. But we stop every 3 hours or so; Maynard is also harness/leash trained; and let him get out and run and use the litter box; grab a snack and drink.
Wherever I've moved in the past, I always put the cats in a bathroom with the door closed along with their litterbox and food/water, toys, etc. A little pat of butter on the tops of their front paws kept them busy for awhile and we could move everything into the house before they realized what was happening.

| Purred: Fri Sep 18, '09 11:42am PST | | | | | | I lived at a large breed dog breeder; 27 acres mostly just horse-fenced. We had 3 barn cats that were fed cooked turkey during the winter, but in spring summer and fall they pretty much fended for themselves. I would give them each about 2 cups of dry cat food from the rescue kitties' bin, but that and fresh water was about all they got. After all they were there to keep the outbuildings free of vermin. They were the healthiest, robust kitties I have ever seen. The oldest, Spook, was 14 years old and could take down a rabbit like no one else. They always pounced and let go a few times. The theory of testing their prey for soundness before eating makes sense, now that I look back on their hunting habits. It was pretty gross to watch, but they were doing what comes naturally. | | | | |

| Purred: Fri Sep 18, '09 6:04am PST | | | | | | Maynard's birth/litter etc is a mystery to us. A friend's dog found him huddled under a large bush, screaming. No littermates around. He appeared to be healthy, no fleas (in Tennessee in May), clean ears, not scrawny, so he must have wandered away from his home. He wasn't even on solids yet; we estimate his age to be about 5 weeks.
He's always been a little stand-offish; I was concerned because he never wanted to be held or anything. He now goes to work with us, where he meets tons of people. He purrs; he rubs; he shows his tummy to be petted with customers. With us, his family he bites; he growls; he's always very rough. He always wants to play hard. The only time he's nice is at night when he's a little cold, and wants body heat. We still love him though. He's such a funny little guy, and we're hoping he'll settle down with age. If not oh well; that's just Maynard.
