Cat Health > Hyperthyroid Issue/Bad Reaction To Medication
Cody

Thank you Beatrice & BK for the prompt response to my plea. Cody hasn't been on any thyroid medicine since last Thursday morning, June 5th. He was doing fine on the lower dosage. That's why I am wondering why the drastic change in his demeanor. Is this drug still in his system or is there something else going on. Prior to his bloodwork, I had no idea he had a hyperthroid. He was playful, affectionate. He had lost weight, but wasn't especially hungry all the time. Ocassionaly he would cry and throw up, but he would recover with no side affects.
He ate a little this morning - a presciption can of Purina EN. I am giving him small amounts of food. He wanted dry food, so I soaked a little in some water to soften it and he was eating it when I left for work. I'll go home on my lunch hour and check in on him and give him his anti-nausea pill.
I'll keep you posted and thank you both for taking the time to respond.

Cat Health > Hyperthyroid Issue/Bad Reaction To Medication

I am desperate for help. My Cody was diagnosed with hyperthroidism on 5/23 from his bloodwork done at his annual check up. He was put on 2.5 mgs of Felimazole, twice a day. He seemed to tolerate it. 10 days after, the dosage was increased to 5 mgs twice a day. He got ill on the third day after starting the higher dosage. He would howl and cry and then vomit clear liquid. He kept me up all night Thursday into Friday morning doing this. I took him to the vet Friday. They gave him a shot of anti-nausea medicine and some fluids and told me to hold off on giving him any more pills and no food or water that night. He slept all day Friday. Saturday morning he started in with the howling and crying, but no vomiting. I picked up an appetite stimulant at the vets and that seemed to perk him up a little. He ate almost an entire can of Fancy Feast and part of another over the span of 8 eight hours.
Sunday morning, he woke me up at 3:00 am meowing/crying in my bedroom. He ran downstairs and vomited. This continued on and off for the rest of the night. He would quiet down, then start howling, crying and followed by vomiting (clear liquid).
I took him back to the vet today. They don't think it's a reaction to the thyroid medicine, since the last pill he took was on Thursday morning. They were thinking pancreatitis. He had blood drawn, but the results didn't point to anything wrong with his pancreas. He got more fluids and another shot of anti-nausea meds. I also have some anti-nausea pills to give him the next few days. They said if he doesn;t improve, they will have to conduct further tests.
Has anyone had a cat that had a bad reaction to thyroid medicine and how long did it take to get over it? Does anyone have any other ideas about what could be going on with Cody?
I love this cat and hate to see him suffer. I should mention he is 14 years old, but has been in good health, other than a heart murmur.
They are also recommending that he have surgery to remove his thyroid. Can anyone offer advice about that?
Sorry for any typos, I am tired from not getting much sleep last night.

Thank you

It is 8:45 in Central Vermont. It started raining sometime during the night. It's raining quite heavy now, but not windy yet. No water in the cellar yet! Stay dry and safe everyone!

It's not doing anything at the moment in the Central Vermont area. The Weather Channel is showing a flash flood watch for the entire state from Sunday morning through Monday morning. My town is just recovering from a major flood in May - lots of damage to homes & businesses and roads. It would be a shame if flooding happens all over again. There is a river down the street from my home, but it doesn't reach my house because we sit up on a little hill. But when we get a lot of heavy rain, we get water in the cellar which the sump pump can take care of, unless the power goes out. I don't even want to think of that happening. So we will just hunker down and ride out the storm like everyone else.
Stay safe & dry kitties & catsters!
