Don't breed or- buy when shelter- pets die |
| Purred: Wed Nov 25, '09 1:06am PST | | | | | You need to get to the vet. This could be a sign of something serious. Black, tarry poop is a sign of digested blood. So unless you're feeding bloody meats like heart, this means that there is bleeding somewhere high in the digestive system.

Raw Food Diet > Cheap boneless meats?

| Purred: Tue Nov 24, '09 8:15am PST | | | | | Wonderful suggestions already mentioned. I would also add that talking to butchers, farmers or other meat vendors is invaluable. They can set aside scraps and notify you of meat that's past the sell by date that you can pick up on the cheap. | | | | |

Raw Food Diet > I do not like raw, or no I don't

| Purred: Tue Nov 24, '09 8:07am PST | | | | | Variety - offer a different meat every meal
Texture - try cutting it up into different sized chunks and see what they like
Smell - maybe you need to stink it up a bit. You could try quickly searing or blanching the BONELESS meat chunks, coating meat with meat baby food, pureed liver or even crushed kibble.
Also if you were previously feeding kibble and still have some left over, GET IT OUT OF THE HOUSE! Cats have good sniffers and if they can smell the kibble krack they may refuse other foods.
Don't give up! | | | | |

| Purred: Tue Nov 24, '09 7:54am PST | | | | | If you're willing to go the real food route try this:
Skip the food bowl and use a towel or placemat. "Accidentally" drop some meat off a plate as you're walking by. See if kitty jumps on it like it's a wondrous treasure. There is nothing tastier than forbidden fruit, so see if that method might jump start kitty's interest in real food.

Cat Health > Gas/Flatulent Kitty?
Gordie
Don't breed or- buy when shelter- pets die |
| Purred: Tue Nov 24, '09 7:46am PST | | | | | When we found Gordie he had to live in our attached garage for a while until we could get him vetted. He had the stinkiest gas and poo I've ever experienced. One day I was doing laundry (laundry room is in the house and the dryer vents into the garage) and I could smell his gas from the laundry room. It made my eyes water.
Since we found him on the street we have no idea what he'd been eating up until we got him. His gas problem went away completely after he switched to a raw diet. In fact, neither of my cats have had gas since we went raw. I would guess that it's the grains, fruits and veggies in commercial food that ferment in the system that cause gas.

Cat Health > is surgery our only option for object/tumor

| Purred: Mon Nov 23, '09 10:13am PST | | | | | There are a lot of foreign bodies that will not show up on an x-ray. Foam comes to mind.
I think you have two options here and I don't think you have much time to make the decision.
1. Get an ultrasound done and see if you can find out what the mass is. This is not cheap. You're probably looking at $300.
2. Do the surgery. If your cat has been otherwise healthy up until this, I would go with this option. An ultrasound will likely show that surgery is necessary anyway, so save that money and put it toward the surgery.
I really don't think you have the time to wait to see if the object will pass on its own. Do the surgery.

Cat Health > 12 week old won't eat, is gagging, diarrhea
Khina
Don't breed or- buy when shelter- pets die |
| Purred: Thu Nov 12, '09 11:33am PST | | | | | Has your vet ruled out the possibility of a blockage? If she's only having diarrhea maybe she has some sort of partial blockage. Will she eat pumpkin or squash purée?
Obviously Aura needs to get nutrition in any way possible. Were she one of my critters I would get a free range organic chicken, boil it down, remove all the bones and purée it to mush using the cooking liquid to thin as needed. To this I would add squash purée. Keep her diet as simple as possible with the bare minimum of ingredients.
Get well soon, Aura! I hope the vet can figure this out for you.
