Other Meows & Purrs > Fake Cats? Huh?
Stella

Stella- Felinis--Queen- of All Kitties!

Purred: Thu May 16, '13 9:09pm PST
It's Stella. We Grays just wanted to brag to someone and who else but our Fake Cat buds?! We caught a HUGE mouse last night and we got it out of a locked cabinet! The kitchen cabinets have child-proff locks on them but we have figured out how to get them open. The mouse comes up from the water pipes back there and lurks in the cabinet all winter. Why he is still here we do not know, as there is no food in here and it's nice outside now, But we got him and threw him in the air multiple times and tried to get the body away from out person. Aren't we just the supercats?!! big grin

Hope you are all well and getting lots of blue ribbons and gold medals in cat shows and being wild and crazy kitties. Delyte is gradually fading away and getting weaker and older, but occasionally he can fly like a gazelle. We steal his food and his favorite sleeping places with inpunity now. How the mighty have fallen ....

This is Delyte. Sending so many purrs to Shadow's family on his passing. What a tremendous life he has had. I too have insides that are too small and I have made it to 18. Wonder if there is any connection?

Giant purrs of many colors and strengths coming to you from all of us for Shadow's passing and also for Dylan. You are truly noble and distinguished cat people for giving these kitties such wonderful lives. hug cat on moon

Saying Goodbye: Memorials & Support > Fennie, our beloved cat

Delyte

I hate- thunderstorms!!

Purred: Sat May 4, '13 2:34pm PST
This is Delyte. There are online groups supporting those with pet grief, so please don't think you are the only one with these issues.

When you do get settled into your new house, please think about adopting another kitty or more than one. Fennie would be so happy to think that you are giving a good life to another kitty.

I am lucky--I have been peeing on the carpet but my person took me to the vet and they treated me and I stopped doing it. It is very hard for house-proud people to deal with senior incontinence issue--and cats don't like being dirty and would only do it as a last resort. So far, I know the difference between the floor and the pan, but when I don't any more, I will be happier on the Bridge.

Cat Health > Hind legs going numb

Delyte

I hate- thunderstorms!!

Purred: Sun Apr 28, '13 7:43pm PST
This is Delyte. In an old cat this can be caused by degeneration of the discs and pressure on the spinal cord. In a young cat it can be caused by a disc slipping out of place. He could have been playing furiously and twisted himself. Unfortunately you can't tell a cat to be careful playing. Hope it doesn't happen again. Giant purrs! cat on moon

Food & Nutrition > Feeding cat different flavors of the same brand?

Delyte

I hate- thunderstorms!!

Purred: Fri Apr 26, '13 6:16pm PST
This is Delyte. I think this would be okay on the high quality brands, but not so much on supermarket brands. A lot of places subcontract different varieties of foods to other smaller makers. Also, when it comes to kitties having digestive or allergic reactions to foods, even one small ingredient change makes a difference. Right now we can feed Stella cooked turkey meat or one kind of turkey cat food--but another brand gives her the heaves. She is definitely not okay with all of the different kinds of cat foods sold as the same brand, as she seems to have violent reactions to something that only occurs in certain kinds of food, that we can't even pin down using the ingredient list. So we can't reliably switch between even different flavors of Merricks or Whole Balance. Because of her, we are basically limited to two flavors of one and 3-4 of another. Separate feedings are impossible here, so we all have to eat the same.

There have also been cats posting here that they became extremely ill after eating a kind of food that they had eaten for years, so there are failures in production more often than we would think.

The vets say that you don't have to switch cats around to different flavors/kinds of food as cats do not need variety in their diets. I beg to differ with that kind of thinking!! shock We are not hogs being fed from a trough here!

This is Delyte and the Grays. We mourn your loss with you. To lose a beloved kitty so young is agony. She will be happpy without pain on the Bridge and eventually she will send you a new kitty to love, as they always do. Food & Nutrition > Converting a kibble addict

Delyte

I hate- thunderstorms!!

Purred: Mon Apr 22, '13 4:40pm PST
This is Delyte. Kyubey, if they give you shrimp and you feel that strongly about it, pass it on to me!! big grin

Our person didn't have too much trouble switching the Grays, who were all fed cheap kibble when they were ferals. They still adore any kind of dry kibble, and we give them a piece once a day as a cat treat. [They all seemed to have problems digesting actual cat treats.]

Will Kyubey eat any kind of cooked or raw meat? That might serve as a bridge to canned food, or maybe you could switch him to raw? Have you tried pouring tuna water or oil on the set food? Does he like tuna? As long as he is getting some non-kibble food in him, you can go as slow as you need.

Have you tried any of those weird foods they make for allergic cats with duck or trout or something like that?

Purrs to you in your efforts! You are a great cat person! cat on moon

Behavior & Training > Deliberate targeted urination

Delyte

I hate- thunderstorms!!

Purred: Thu Apr 18, '13 7:39pm PST
This is Delyte's person. I'm too mad at him to let him write! For the last three weeks he has been peeing next to the pan, only when I am in the bathroom and can see him. Last night he actually waited until I turned around and then squatted.

We went to the vet last week and although there was only the tiniest sign of a UTI, they gave him an antibiotic shot with some steroids. He continued it for two more days and then stopped and went for 6 days without incident. Tues. he went back to the vet for another shot and got some subq fluids. He was fine until last night, 36 hours after leaving vet. He is also using the pan correctly 3-4 times a day and emptying his bowels there.

He will be 18 in less than 2 weeks and has advanced kidney disease, hyperthyroid, arthritis and bad teeth. I don't want to put him through any extensive treatments or tests as he is very thin and his heart beats so quickly when he gets frightened. He can't be given any meds by mouth as he has a very sensitive stomach due to some surgery 7 years ago. He gets his thyroid meds rubbed on his ears.

He may be in pain but he does not act like it at all, and can leap like a gazelle when he wants to. His appetite is huge and he enjoys food immensely. He doesn't interact with the other cats much and has pushed off the girl cat who is in love with him and they don't cuddle any more. He occasionally gets in bed with me but not much.

So is this a behavior issue? I debated as to putting this here or in Senior Cats. He seems like he hates me--he glares at me so when he is doing it. Is he in so much pain that we should think about sending him to the Bridge? I thought if his appetite fails that would be it, but it has never lagged, He eats more than the other 3 cats combined. But his weight is falling to skeletal proportions and the vet is not sure if he is absorbing enough meds through his ears. I am doubling that for now.

The only thing that he has that is painful is his arthritis--most of his teeth are gone but no signs of infection. I well know how painful arthritis is, but we don't see how we can medicate him for pain given his gastric problem. Or we can medicate him and if he stops eating and sleeps all the time, then is that the time for him to go to Bridge? With the other cats it was very clear, as their kidneys stopped working, but his are actually a little better than last year. He is such a tough cat! But it would be a lot easier for me to admire him if I weren't struggling to clean the carpet every day--which since I cannot bend over is a big challenge.

Any advice?

Behavior & Training > My cat is being obnoxious

Delyte

I hate- thunderstorms!!

Purred: Thu Apr 18, '13 7:18pm PST
This is Delyte. You got some good advice but here is one slightly less common cause. Are you sure he is completely neutered? Some male cats have undescended testicles which get missed in the usual procedure, and if the cat is young and everything is tiny, then it would be very hard for the vet to tell. Or alternatively is there some other source of testosterone in his body? Because he sure sounds like a tomcat wanting to prowl and it is spring.

We don't think the complete lockdown will work either, but no idea what else to do except Feliway or other calming things.

Good luck! cat on moon

This is Delyte. Poor Tripod! Our person's first girl cat had breast cancer and she knows how devastating that surgery is. Not wanting to eat after surgery is common--it might be an effect of the anesthesia or the pain meds. I didn't eat on my own for 10 days after my abdominal surgery and had to be force fed. Glad you decided to eat on your own. Giant purrrs to you to beat this!

The vet gave me a fairly clean health report, and I got some more meds for my bladder. But tonight I did it again, made a big puddle while my person was wastching. She is tearing her hair out with frustration. Two weeks today until my birthday .... cat on moon
