| Purred: Thu Apr 18, '13 7:58am PST | | | | | Jan, for what it's worth, I think you're doing the right thing for the right reasons, for Lillian. If that's the only thing that helps her and if she had a painful existence otherwise, then what other choice is there?
I had a small discussion with one of our vets about Metacam, when he once mentioned it as a possibility to consider using for Beepers' arthritis -- the same reason you're using it. This vet received board certification in feline medicine by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (AVBP-feline) and currently serves as chairperson of the research committee for the American Association of Feline Practitioners.
He feels the problems with Metacam were likely because of misuse, especially using too high a dose, and he thinks it's safe when used properly and with caution. I didn't yet read the entire article that Merlin posted the link to, but I think that's saying about the same thing.
We are not using Metacam for Beepers, since his arthritis does not seem that painful for him yet and there are other alternatives to try first. If it came down to Metacam being the only thing that helped, though, I'd use it.

| Purred: Sat Mar 23, '13 8:43pm PST | | | | | I had a cat who had all her teeth removed, and she did not drink water for a few days afterward. She, too, was eating (canned food only), but did not drink. The vet said not to worry too much about it for the first few days, as long as she was eating okay -- and she did finally start drinking water again.
You could add a little water to his canned food, so he gets some more water that way.
Just like with humans, the anesthesia and pain medications can make it hard to get things moooving again after a surgery. You could give him a little bit of plain canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling, just plain pumpkin), if he'll eat it, or you could mix some in his food. It's good for both diarrhea and constipation. Here are suggestions for starting amount: Treatments for Constipation
I wouldn't withhold the pain medication if he still has pain.
I hope Parker's back to his regular self soon.

It's the phosphorus content in the food that should be kept low for kidney disease. I did a 'quick search' of these forums using only the term "phosphorus" and came up with several posts that have helpful information and references (to other websites). There were links to charts that give the phosphorus content of various foods.
I picked out one fairly recent thread from my 'quick search' with good information that may help:
Kidney Disease
There were several other pages of posts about "phosphorus", too.

| Purred: Fri Mar 1, '13 8:43pm PST | | | | | Beepers is my nickname. It was derived in a roundabout way from my official 'registered' name of 'Meet Joe Black.' That's a movie starring Brad Pitt, and I was called BP - for Brad Pitt - for a while. Then I moved to a different home/owner -- she changed BP to Beepers. When I was adopted again after that, my (current) mom and dad liked the name Beepers, so they continue to call me that.
I don't know why my original owners (breeders) named me Meet Joe Black.
Beep, how did you get your name?

| Purred: Tue Feb 19, '13 9:18am PST | | | | | Your description does sound like reverse sneezing. Our cat Scooter had episodes of reverse sneezing. At the time, I didn't know what it was, so I took video of her during an episode and showed it to the vet. The vet said it was reverse sneezing.
Then last year I thought Beepers was coughing occasionally but I wasn't sure it was a cough. I took video and the vet confirmed it was a cough. (Beepers had chest x-rays and blood tests to see whether it might be asthma - it turned out to be bronchitis and it cleared up on its own.)
So if you can get some video, it could help the vet diagnose.
Here is a link to video of Scooter 'reverse sneezing' (it may be slow to load):

| Purred: Wed Feb 13, '13 10:08pm PST | | | | | I don't know how people can do that, but maybe there was some good reason they could no longer take care of you. Congratulations on your new home, though, and best of luck on your trip! My mom got to help a kitty get to her new home on the Underground Railroad Rescued Kitty Network last summer. We'll keep track of your trip this weekend. | | | | |

| Purred: Wed Feb 13, '13 1:59pm PST | | | | | Along with the Lysine and sitting with the cat in a steamy bathroom, our vet has also suggested using a warm-mist or cool-mist humidifier near where the cat sleeps and using the Vick's plug-ins in the room. Also, infant saline nose drops -- those are kind of tricky to put in, though (and she said to put it in only one nostril, then wait an hour or two before doing the other nostril). | | | | |

| Purred: Sat Nov 10, '12 7:13am PST | | | | | I have a friend whose cat was peeing outside the box (determined to be a behavior issue, not a medical one). L-Theanine is helping. It's the ingredient in Anxitane®. My friend is using L-Theanine instead of Anxitane® since it's cheaper, but a vet determined the dose for her to use.
Here's a link: ANXITANE®
It's something to ask your vet about. It sounds as if Einstein may have both medical and behavioral issues. Stress could be exacerbating the medical issues, so an anti-anxiety supplement might help. At this point, I'd think it's worth checking into.
Here's a vet's page on Facebook that anyone will be able to see, whether you're on Facebook or not. Just close out the big pop-up window that wants you to sign up for Facebook in order to 'connect' with Dr. Nichol. You don't have to 'connect' with him to be able to see the page. Dr. Nichol has been using Anxitane® successfully, and has a recent post (Nov 5) about it. That post is about dogs but Dr. Nichol advised my friend with her cat, too.
https://www.facebook.com/DrJeffNichol
Also, have you tried pee pads in places where Einstein pees? You can get cheap bed pads for people at Target or WalMart (usually near the pharmacy section) for probably less than you'll pay for 'puppy pee pads' in the pet dep't.
