Does your Akita or any dog have black nails that you cannot see the quick (?spelling?)?

I can't see the my dog's quicks, when I'm trimming her nails, so I just trim the tip of the nails. Does anyone have any suggestions on this?

I use a variable speed dremel and take off a little bit at a time. This helps to actually see the quick of the nail. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dremel

I also use a dremel. It helps to shape the nails and to avoid the quick.

Which dremel (?spelling?) model would you suggest?

I just got a generic one from Costco. As long as it has variable speeds, you should be fine. I wouldn't go out and spend a ton of money on one. Harbor Freight is a good place to get one, if there are any local to you. They are really cheap there. Just make sure it has the cylindrical sanding bit. You may go through them quickly, so you're better off w/ a kit that has multiple replacements in it.

Thanks for the info! We don't have a Costco or Harbor Freight here, but maybe Tractor Supply, Walmart, or some other store may have them. I'll have to check them out to know for sure. All I know is that I have to get one soon, because so far, I've been clipping only a little bit of her nails so that she can walk comfortably and not get her nails caught in my carpets. Her nails grow fast too, so I'll have to get them trimmed back further without hurting her.frown

I would recommend not getting a dremmel that is specifically made for trimming nails. They are weak and don't last long. Get one out of the tool/hardware department. And if you do quick her, don't panic. Just have some styptic powder or corn starch handy and put that on the nail and hold it there for a little while. If you do quick her w/ the dremel, she probably won't bleed as bad as if you would have quicked her w/ clippers. Good luck!

Tyson's nails stay so short I've never actually had to trim them! But I was interested in getting a file of sorts too for cleaning them up a bit at least because they do get frayed.

I went looking for one, and so far, all I've seen were "cheap knock offs"! What's going on these stores?

Just wondering, do any of you -well it's not exactly shave- but trim your Akita's fur down for the summer?

No, and I do not recommend shaving/trimming your dog for several reasons:

1. Sometimes the hair just doesn't grow back right. I used to work at a pet care facility (grooming, daycare, boarding, etc.) and I've seen a few that just looked weird ever since they were shaved.
2. Their coat not only keeps them warm, but it helps keep them cool. It forms an insulated barrier that keeps their temperature regulated.
3. Their coat also protects them from harmful UV rays.

Make sure she has plenty of cold water to drink. If it's really hot, take her outside only to use the bathroom and then come right back in. If it's too hot outside for you, it's definitely too hot out for your dog lol.
