My name is Harry and I am new to this group. I am a male cat that is 11 years old and have stones. I am scheduled to go in for a procedure called Perineal Urethrostomy and it sounds scary. Just was wondering if anyone else has gone through this and would like feedback and would love to know what me and my mom can expect when she brings me home.

Hi Harry,

I have had the PU surgery and so has our other admin Oliver Winston Parsons. It is a serious surgery, but it does have a very good rate of success, so afterwards you will never have to put up with the kind of pain you've had from stones again.

You probably will be in the hospital for a few days after surgery, and when you get home your mobility will be limited for 2 or 3 weeks - you'll likely have one of those surgical cones around your neck. You'll need to use special cat litter during that time, and see the surgeon for a couple of follow-up visits. If your experience with stones has caused you to go outside the litterbox, it may take a little while before you adjust back to everything feeling okay again when you use the litterbox. But after that everything should be just fine for you.

We have a couple of articles about PU surgery in the links section, and we've discussed it in some of the forum threads as well. If you have any other questions feel free to ask here or pawmail me.

When is your surgery scheduled? I will be purring for you. hughug

Thank you so much for your response! I am scheduled for surgery this Thursday the 16th! Me and mom are very nervouse since we dont know what to expect. Surgery is scary and just hope we are doing the right thing. I've been doing good at home these days, almost like my old self but I know the stones are still there and I am a picky eater so this is probably for the best. Thanks again for your response and your purrrs smile

Purring for you Harry and hope that your surgery goes well! Is there any way to know if some of the stones have dissolved with diet? If so, what are the chances that the surgery isn't needed? What does your vet say about this? thinking

Surgery went well today ( thats what the Doctor said ) Little bleeding but he says thats normal. Pretty soon I can finally eat something and they are going to give me some more pain meds before the end of day. I have a cathedar in right now ( not liking that ) and a cool new hat! ( or soft e collar they call it ) I miss mommy and cant wait to go home! But I will try and get lots of rest so I can feel better. Good night!

Hello all! Its just over a week after surgery and I had my 1st check up a couple days ago. Doctor says I'm doing well. Have some soft stools so thats making it a little messy around my surgical area but other then that I seem to be coming along fine! I'm still wearing the plastic e collar since the soft one didnt work out for me but I think I'm finally getting the hang of it. I go for another check up in a week and then the following week I get my stiches out and hopefully will be back to normal!! yay! I cant wait to run all over the house again. Mommy keeps me in a bedroom so I can relax and heal. Its no fun though. Thank you all for checking in on meway to gowavebig grin

I'm glad to read things are going well for you, Harry. Those cones sure are annoying - I'm sorry you have to put up with the stupid hard one.

Did your vet give your Mom a way to clean the surgical area, since you have some possible contamination issues there? That was my doctor's biggest concern. I seem to recall Mama using q-tips and a gentle antiseptic like Betadine or something. red face I also remember being bored out of my skull once I was feeling better but still "recovering" and not allowed to do much. You have my sympathies. But it will be worth it when you really are all better, and know you don't have to worry about blocking ever again. wishes

Well I was told I could use a non scented baby wipe for cleaning the bottom but to watch out for incision. But since my last posting I have now found a way with the cone on and all to lick down there. I think i overheard mom on the phone with the vet today and looks like I will be going back tomorrow now for that re check to make sure I didnt do anything bad. oops! frown
