We have just moved into our new house.

I boarded my cats for 5 days to keep them safe. Yesterday, I bring them home, free them from their carriers in the garage and ZIP... in the blink of an eye, Smarty darts across the room and finds an opening between the wall and the stairs (stone wall/concrete stairs going to an old two room area above the garage) and she's GONE! Of course Cookie follows right behind her. I caught Cookie by the butt/tail but she screamed so loud I let go. Now they are both living in the wall!!! And have been for two days!!! They will not come out.

I have not put out any food or water in this two day time period. Plans are tomorrow I will take out some stinky tuna and hope they will be hungry enuf to come out.

Any other suggestions?

I've had these two since they were babies. They have always been fun, mellow cats. Inside cats only! That split second two days ago they were both like crazy wild cats trying to escape something awful!frownfrown

They may not be able to find their way out. You may have to put a hole in the wall so they can escape. They could be trapped. Keep trying to draw them out for a day or two then it's up to you, but this could be dangerous to them. You may have to put a hole in the wall.shrug

Ok... I took a sledge hammer to the stone wall cry , even with all the noise, Cookie was very happy to see me and came running right out, SmartyCat on the other hand... not so much... she was still "crazy". I waited a couple hours for her to get over the noise and hopefully come out the new hole on her own. She wouldnt... I had to go in after her... (yuck-0!!!) They are both front declawed and Smarty still managed to tear me up with her back claws and teeth. I've got them confined inside a "live animal" cargo crate, one of those extra huge ones for Great Dane sized dogs. I dont know what i'm going to do with them now.... shrug

Lets hope this adjustment period gets easier... sheesh!! kitty

Hello, this reminds me of when we moved to our new home 2 years ago..We brought all our cats over in a couple of trips.Ya see we moved from a very small apt in town to a large home in the country..At the time we had 13 cats. Now,as we brought them in the new house,I remember bringing them into the livingroom and opening the carriers..They of coarse ran for the hill's,(sort of speak)..I didnt see a few of them for a couple of days..I just let them alone, put food/water out and when they were ready they all came around and relaxed enough..After a while they all were back to normal.During the time that some were hidden in my dinning room ect, I remember maxwell did alot of cring as he was scared of the new house..I think it was normal for your cats to run off the way they did..All mine did due to the drive over and new surroundings..Is there a way you could put them in a small bedroom in the house until they settle down and get calm and back to normal..Maybe if you moved them to your home and fixed up the garage during that time maybe it could help, you then could introduce them slowly to the garage one by one.good luck,,let me know what you worked out for them

Marty, thank you for taking the time to write and assure me my cats are "normal". Currently, they are in the garage (it's heated) in an ex-large cargo crate, with cat pan and food/water. I hope to bring them inside tomorrow, like you said, one room at a time, slowly. BUT WOW... I can't believe Smarty... her total FREAKY-ness... I can't explain it. And... to be quite honest... i'm very concerned about her WILD cat behavior. She slams into walls and windows full speed... i'm afraid she's going to hurt herself. Funny thing is, while being borded... Smarty was calm, cool and collected, Cookie was the worrier, now look at the two of 'em! eek

You might want to try feel away. It's a cat pheromone spray or plug ins. It helps relive anxiety. We use it around the 4th of July because of all the noise from fireworks, and when we would bring in a new cat or kitten. Sometimes when they are acting crazy and picking on one another to much we plug one in. It really does help.

Where's Mommy?

When we moved from the vet's office where we were born and lived for about seven months to our forever home, I was sooo scared. My brother, Bobby, was with me, and he wasn't scared at all. My Mommy put us in a bedroom with comfortable furniture and big windows to look out of. I crawled into a corner under the bed and hid. My Mommy brought things from other parts of the house into our room so we could smell other smells. She and Mr. H spent time with us and played games. I hid. Then, after about a week, she opened the door to our room and let us decide when to come out. I hid. Bobby went out to explore right away. Then Jack arrived, and Jack is fearless. He walked right out of the carrier and saw Bobby, and they started to play -- just like they did at the vet's. I hid. It took me several weeks to feel even a little confident in my new home. I'm still a scaredy cat, but that's just me. The vet's plan for introducing us to our new home worked pretty well.

I hope you guys learn to love your new home.

That stuff Kibbles is talking about is called Feliway, you can get it at your Vet (if he uses it) or order it online. We have used it at catshows and have let others use it, comes in a spray or wipes.
Its about 30 dollars for a small can, but it might work, each cat may or may not react to it.
