Vacation-Sitting Cats 101: Establishing relations

If you are a dog person, you probably act a little like a dog.
You like to greet people face to face and you like to be touched.
Cats do not like to be greeted loudly and frontally and they hate it when you run at them. Establishing relations with cats you are vacation-sitting is an oblique activity.
Slide into the room and find a comfortable activity.
Perhaps, get yourself a snack and go sit quietly in a chair and watch TV or read a book.
No need to say much at first.
Allow the cat to watch you and if you are successful in looking trustworthy, stable and disinterested, kitty might come see you.
Resist the temptation to grab him and give him a big wet kiss.
Good things take time.

Vacation-Sitting Cats 101: Dinner is served

If you are a dog person (or don't have a cat), but are in the position of vacation-sitting cats, here is a tip for good relations with the other species.
Cats do not like to be stared at.
When you enter the house, do not cast your eyes about for cats and do not stare at the cats you do find.
DO get their food and fresh water expediently before you clean the litter.
Cats who have been left while their owners are on holiday can be resentful; they don't want you to come in and stare them down and pay more attention to the litter box than to their tummies.
(Yes, if it were dogs you were vacation-sitting, you would come in boisterously, look right at them, fluff their fur, take them out immediately for a nice walk and then get to the food.
For cats, you have to think differently.)

Vacation-Sitting Cats 101: A dirty, stinky trick

For dog people who really, really, really want cats to like them, there is one unfair opportunity open to you.
Buy a can of salmon.
Open the can before visiting the cats and rub, yes just do it, some of the fluid in the can on the backs of your hands and on your ankles. Pack the salmon in a lidded container.
Go visit the cats. Sit quietly while they swish around you sniffing your delightful perfume.
Finally, feed the salmon to the cats.
Go home and wash up before trying your powers of attraction on human subjects.
Next visit, the cats will be well disposed towards you.

Vacation-Sitting Cats 101: Another dirty trick: Toys!

Cats get bored when they are left with that same old dried up catnip mouse and dusty chime ball.
Want to see cats smile for you?
Go to the pet store and buy the most highly recommended cat toy you can find.
Don't even try to pick it out yourself.
Dog people will pick up a useless rope tug toy or a big heavy kong. Let the salesperson guide you.
(And do not be cheap. Heaven forbid Kitty chokes on your cheap chicken feather covered scrap.)
Then, enter softly, rustle the bag, and whisper, "Who's your daddy?" as you bring out that catnip toy on a fly fishing rod.
Bet you'll have that cat eating out of your hand in no time.

Sitting Cats 101: Litter box etiquette

One more cat-sitting tip for the dog person:
If you want the cats you are vacation-sitting to love you - and since you are a dog person you indeed DO want everybody to love and approve of you because that's how you're wired - DO clean the litter box every day.
Cats have to prance around in the box to do what they do.
How would you feel if your box were full of last night's dinner?
Cats love dog people (and dogs) who take care of them.

Hanging around: Worry-free window treatments

Long, flowing draperies add softness to a room but they can also bring out your kitty's playful side, leaving hair behind on the fabric and possibly rips and tears.
The solution? Choose shades and blinds that go up and down, and stop at the sill.
Keep them raised up and out of paw's reach until you need privacy. If cords are too tempting for your feline, consider remote controlled window shades that lift and lower with the push of a button.

Cleaning solutions: Kitty hair balls and vomit

The next time your cat coughs up a hairball or vomits on the rug, apply a heavy coat of baking soda on the accident and walk away. That's right, just walk away.
The baking soda does all the hard work for you by absorbing moisture deposited in the carpet from regurgitated food and stomach acids.
After the baking soda dries, pick-up heavier pieces with a paper towel and dispose of them.
Then use your vacuum's attachment to suction away whatever is left.

Dream a little dream: Cats dream just like we do

Our feline friends dream just like we do, according to researchers.
Most mammals have the same sleep patterns as humans, fluctuating between what are called non-REM and REM sleep modes.
It's during the REM stage (which stands for Rapid Eye Movement) when several minutes of dreaming occurs.
In cats, REM happens about every 25 minutes.
Carefully observing your dozing pet can offer clues to when he or she enters into a dream state.
You'll notice slight jerking of the paws, relaxation of body muscles, whisker twitching and irregular breathing pattern - sometimes deep; other times shallow.

Simple tips to enrich your cat's living quarters

By enriching your cat's indoor environment not only are you improving her quality of life but you're also preventing potential medical and behavioral issues from developing, experts say.
Here are three easy ways to make your kitty's life a little more enjoyable:

- Rotate your cat's toys daily to keep her visually stimulated and interested in playing with them.

- Fulfill your cat's hunting desire through daily play sessions with a feather wand, or other toys that allow your kitty to stalk and catch imaginary prey.

- Play a DVD created just for cats, like "Kitty Cat Daycare" or "Video Catnip," which were produced to capture feline interest with images of birds and other small mammals.

Just say no: Keep your prescription drugs out of paw's reach.

Each year the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center receives tens of thousands of calls related to pets accidentally ingesting their owners' over-the-counter and prescription medications.
Some human drugs - such as antidepressants and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and Baclofen (a muscle relaxant) - can sicken or even kill your feline so keep medications off counter tops and securely stored in a cabinet or drawer.
If both you and your cat are on medication, avoid mix-ups by keeping the vials in separate places.
