Raza had a great idea so I thought I'd start this start this thread "It'll be fun to try out new recipes (food for the humans) We could have things that are common in the pantry and low cost. Like recipes with foods/ veggies that are in season as they are the cheapest. What meats are cheap at the moment? It could be fun. Also I don't know if cleaners are expensive there, but here they really do blow the budget. There are some great cheap ideas out there using baking soda and vinegar"

Little Red kicked things off with this suggestion:

Mom keeps a beanpot/slowcooker and makes big pots of beanies, soups, and stews. You can assemble just about anything into a soup!

We also use vinegar and baking soda and peroxide to clean. Peroxide will remove MANY spots and is great to remove organic stuffs like poops/urine and blood. A groomer gave us that tip.

Meows,
Little Red

PS, Beans are loaded with good stuff and they taste good! So do peas and lentils!
And in this summer heat don't forget cold soups!

The crockpot idea is a good one. Mum used that a lot when she was a student. She'd start it off with some cheap bony cuts of meat and just leave it running all week and throw in some extra lentils and veggies each day. It changed from lamb stew to lentil/veggie soup through the week but it was always tasty.

If you are making a meat based chile or spagetti sauce you can add grated zuchini or carrot to stretch it out and be able to use less meat. It's good for hiding veggies so kids will eat them too! The sauce is just as tasty and doesn't look any different but you can use about one third less meat.

When ever the human makes hamburgers or meat loaf she adds lots of breadcrumbs. I know there are some burger patties that are just meat. But she was taught to add rough bread crumbs, it's a good way to use old bread too, and you don't need as much meat.

Either in a loaf tin or in patties, mix together mince, onion, tomato sauce and small pieces of bread (picked of the bread loaf), salt and pepper and an egg to bind it all together.

You can add other things like chilli powder, mixed herbs, canned beans ( baked or chilli) You can add all sorts to make the meat go further.
Even when she makes Taco she always adds Baked beans (or chilli beans) to the mince. Then you don't need as much meat. It seems the meat is the most expensive part.

Meat loaf burgers,Raza? Sounds delicious! We too have a slow cooker,& we use pork neckbones to make soup. They're cheap & have a surprising amount of meat. Macaroni & cheese is cheap,& you can spice it up lots of ways. Dad likes to put onions, garlic, vegetables & whatever leftover meat from the grill into it. And when we have leftover coals on the grill,we smoke the bones from ribs, etc. to make doggie treats for friends!happy dance

Mom uses cooked rice to stretch hamburger meat.

And she makes home made boudin...which is a rice based sausage. You can pack it in skins or cook it in balls w/out the skins. (You usually squeeze it out of the skins to eat it anyway.)

You don't find it much outside of LA and everyone has their own takes and recipes. You can use a variety of meats/veggies and spices...so clean out that fridge!

Here's a basic recipe for crawfish boudin. Remember, you can also roll the rice mixture in balls and fry istead of stuffing it into casings.

This thread is a great idea! Thank you Raza!

Now that the neighbors gardens are going wild, mom has been fortunate enough to receive some of that bounty. She makes a cucumber thingy....

Mix up sourcream and lemon juice, or vinegar, to taste - roughly 2/3 sourcream to 1/3 lemon juice
salt and pepper to taste
Herbs may be added - dill, tarragon, etc if you want!
Then...
Slice fresh cucumbers up as thin as you can get them
Slice onion also as thin as possible
Add the veggies to the sourcream mix.

It is kind of a cold cucumber salad/sauce. Mom's great grandma used to make this in the summer. It is a nice change from the usual lettuce(which is pretty costly now), and it can be used to make a kind of chicken gyro in a pita. It tastes kind of like tzaziki (?) the sauce used on gyros.

And I agree about the red beans and rice! You can never have too much of that! Just too bad that dad doesn't like it! But he DOES eat the chicken gyros!

Did you all know that the white places in sausage links and ropes and etc is rice?

Momma saw sausages made. They put in half meat, half rice, and spices. Sausages are pretty expensive for being half cheep rice!

Ground sausage is all meat.
