Too poor for leukeran!

Just thought I would provide an update. I have been giving Gracie both Leukeran and Prednisilone. She took the prednisilone along the first month and I started her on the Leukeran late July. She has gone for only ONE blood test and the numbers were good. My vet said (not an oncologist) that since the numbers were good, she does not need to be checked again for 10 weeks. Does that sound right?

Taking her for that first test was about $60. On top of the Leukeran, I cannot afford to take her for blood tests every three weeks. Am I taking a risk??

She's showing no signs of side effects that I can see, and had gained a pound since the last time I brought her to the vet. I feel lucky--but I know at some point the other shoe is going to drop (this was caught very early).

The blood test is to check for anemia. If your vet thinks it's OK to wait, then wait. Just watch for signs of anemia like pale gums and lethargy. If you seem weak or really sick, call the vet to be seen sooner.
