My vet told mom that when you "pill" a cat you hold their head up and our mouth will open, put the pill on the back of the tongue and then using a medicine dropper put a tiny bit of water in the cats mouth.

He also suggested vegetable oil or butter to lubricate the pill.

Mom has used the above method and it has worked so far, except now I am getting smart and want to run off when mom gets the stuff readybig laugh

If anyone else has any methods, feel free to post them here smile

that's interesting, we didn't know that method.
Mom & dad have tried everything. They have that pill shooter thing, didn't work for any of us, tried pill pocket...I don't like them, but my brother is ok with them.
For me, since I take pills twice a day for hyperthyroidism, mom & dad just put me on their lap (on my back) and hold my mouth open & drop it in. It works MOST of the time and I'm usually cooperative...but you know, sometimes I'm not feeling like being very helpful.
Also, my brofur (who likes the pill pockets) also has to take a capsule in capsule form, no chewing or mixing it in the food. Mom & dad usually just sit on him (that's what it looks like) and hold his head up & try to get it in the back of his mouth. Sometimes, especially for mom, he tries to chew & ends of spitting it out, but eventually it works.

Hope some of that is helpful.

Thanks Chip! My vet said as long as the cat's head is up, he or she cannot spit it out....

Great tips! A lot of cats suggested the water in the syringe method once the pill is in and SCORE!! That worked quite well!

I googled ways to pill a cat and they did mention butter/spray stuff.

I wish I liked the pill poppers. Yuck! way to go

My Meowma needed this help! She's been doing OK, and I forgive her so fast because she loves me so much. She's also found it works best when I'm sitting and relaxed and she just pops them in instead of having to work against my movement or hold me still. I take my meds 3 x a day and boy I think it's getting old but Meowma will try this. I have her so well trained!laugh out loudkitty

Hello Willie!

I am glad this thread is useful for you smile. Cats can be super tricky to medicate cats.

I agree Tiskers, the water afterward works really well!

We found also that when the bad pill daddy gives me my meds, if he does it shortly after I wake up? That helps as I'm too tired to run smile

When Bumpurr has to have a pill, I coat it in turkey baby food.

So he thinks he is getting a treat, as he gets the turkey baby food, as a
treat at shows.

I tell him, its time for mediciny, he gets on the counter, sits down, I pop
the pill in, bam, we're done. He also get a few licks of turkey baby food
afterwards too.

To him, he is getting a treat. big grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grinbig grin

I have a question for eveyone. Every so often Frasier will throw up after I give him his morning meds. I am not always able to see if his meds came up. So I am never sure if I should give him his meds again or not. What do you all think? kitty
