 |  |  |  | AARP members get discounts too. It's about the same as AAA. If you do see a good rental deal, grab it immediately -- you don't have to pay for it until the actual date. Also, check every few days or at least weekly... you never know what will appear. Check all the travel sites -- Expedia, Travelocity, plus the car rental company websites as well.
Mom did that when she took a road trip to Washington state some years back... got a fantastic deal on a minivan for 10 or 15 days... ended up being $125 a week with unlimited mileage.
As for the fine print stuff -- be sure that you read all of that -- make sure your rental agreement allows you to cross state lines (some companies don't!) and try and get unlimited mileage.
Also, sometimes a rental company has different rates for different locations within the same city -- like the airport being more or less expensive than a different office. Mom also says it's cheaper if you return the car to the same location where you originally rented it.
With her Washington trip, I think she might have had four different car reservations, then just canceled all but the best one.
