This tip comes from Luc-

CAR RENTAL:
For Costco members, log on to Costco.com and on the Travel/Car Rental section, Alamo and Budget usually have the cheapest rates. Reserve a car through them, and you will not have to pay anything until the day you actually rent a car. The good part about doing this is that you have a solid back-up plan just in case Hotwire's rates are still not to your liking. If there isn't a convention in town or something, it is usually still the cheapest way to go is withe Hotwire on the last minute.

Also AAA if you are a member can sometimes get you a good deal on a car rental. They can also get you package deals with airfare and car rental. So you can check them ouit also. Ill have to check out Sam`s club and see if tehy have any kinds of deals or not .

AARP members get discounts too. It's about the same as AAA. If you do see a good rental deal, grab it immediately -- you don't have to pay for it until the actual date. Also, check every few days or at least weekly... you never know what will appear. Check all the travel sites -- Expedia, Travelocity, plus the car rental company websites as well.

Mom did that when she took a road trip to Washington state some years back... got a fantastic deal on a minivan for 10 or 15 days... ended up being $125 a week with unlimited mileage.

As for the fine print stuff -- be sure that you read all of that -- make sure your rental agreement allows you to cross state lines (some companies don't!) and try and get unlimited mileage.

Also, sometimes a rental company has different rates for different locations within the same city -- like the airport being more or less expensive than a different office. Mom also says it's cheaper if you return the car to the same location where you originally rented it.

With her Washington trip, I think she might have had four different car reservations, then just canceled all but the best one.

XOXOXO,
Sara
