My sweet boy Raisin has been sick since he came home from the breeder. He started out with sneezing and now there is congestion and like gagging. We have had him to the vets several times, and he has been on several antibiotics, nothing his taking care of this. His white blood cell count is really high. The breeder he came from was very dirty. Does anyone have any suggestions on what RX to try him on next?

Sounds like Raisin may have a bad case of URI (upper respiratory infection). My Siamese sister Sydney has it right now too, but she just got started on antibiotics so we're crossing our fingers that it will help. With URI's, cats usually get it from over-crowding or unsanitary conditions, so Raisin most likely got it from the cattery...but we don't know how Sydney got it (as Mommy keeps us and the house very clean!). It is common for cats to get reinfected with URI's over and over again, which could explain why Raisin is getting the reoccuring infections.

If antibiotics aren't working, it's tough to say what would be the next step for Raisin...you may want to try eye drops for the eyes, using a vaporizer in the room to increase the humidity, and use a nasal decongestant to help him breathe. If that doesn't work, hospitalization may be needed to get the infection under control. At any rate, it is important that Raisin keeps eating an adequate amount of food and drinking water as needed.

Hope this has been of some help....good luck to Raisin with this pesky infection and we wish a speedy recovery for him...as well as for Sydney!

Here are some naturopathic remedies that may help Raisin, too:

Beanie has chronic sneezing too. We tried everything. He was on just about every antibiotic out there. Baytril helped, but he couldn't be on it long term. We even took xrays of his skull and had him sedated so they could scope his nose for polyps. They couldn't give us any answers other than he most likely had a herpes virus. They told us to make his life as stress free as possible and try L-lysine; its basically a supplement that helps boost the immune system. We are trying that out so I'll have to let you know how it goes. Definitely start with the antibiotics and what your vet recommends because it could just be an URI that will hopefully go away. If the antibiotics aren't clearing it up, then talk to your vet about L-lysine. You may also find it helpful to know that I mix a small amount of cleaner in a bowl of water (make sure the kitties doesn't get to it) and use a little scrubber brush to scrub the boogies off the walls.

Hope everything worked out for you baby. Max came from a bad cattery as well and was horribly sick. This included a sinus issue that lasted for a year or so. The upside is that although we had to treat with antihystamine's, he eventually was able to stop taking them an now only has occasional issues.

It was so bad when we got him though that you could hear him breathing from the living room when he was upstairs.

My vet said that the other sphynx cats he has taken care of has some similar issues and they outgrew it. It was true for Max.
