this is totally un-dog-related...i couldn't think of a good place to put it on the regular forums, and i thought perhaps some of you who are into the holistic dog care would also be into the organic human eating thing as well. so, without further ado...

i'm planning to get some chickens this spring...just layers, for eggs; no chopping chicken necks for this girl, thanks, and roosters are evil and mean. anyhow.

i have 1.6 acres for a yard, so i have *plenty* of room. i'm planning to enclose a good sized "run" for the chickens...and ideally, once we get our yard completely fenced, i'll let them free-range during warm weather days when i'm at home. but obviously they'll have to have a place that's fully enclosed to keep them from getting eaten by various predators.

i've been perusing the world wide web for designs/plans for a chicken coop, but i haven't found really what i'm looking for. i don't plan on having many hens...probably 5...so i don't need a huge hen house, and all the plans i'm seeing are quite large.

if any of you have any recommendations, or pictures, or any advice at all, i would REALLY appreciate it. i've never done the chicken thing before...except when i was a kid, we had chickens at our barn in florida...but their hen house was actually a horse stall in the barn that my dad build nesting boxes into, and their outdoor area was completely enclosed with wire. i'd like something that's reasonably easy to clean, and where i can access the egg boxes from outside the hen house.

thanks in advance!

Rudy

Honestly, I would find a hobby-chicken-raiser forum and see if they have plans uploaded to look at or just make a new thread. There are forums for every animal imaginable so it shouldnt be hard.

Chickens are dirty little things (I had 2 before) but that's neat you're doing this! What breed(s)?
