Lily is approximately 5 years old. In August of 2008 she was diagnosed with an auto-immune skin disorder, Pemphigus Foleacus (sp?) We have been doing blood tests every now and then since then, and it is now official that she has CRF. Her most recent blood tests (taken yesterday) showed her BUN at 64-65 and her creatinine at 5.5. This is up from her previous results. She also has elevated phosphorous levels. Vet said about 75% of her kidney function is gone. We had her on Acana Grasslands due to allergic reactions to her other food (Innova), so we are starting her today on a Hills kidney diet food, as well as phosphorous binder and antibiotics (she still had red/white blood cells in her urine).

I'm terrified we will lose this battle. I wonder how long we have? We will do anything it takes.

Hi, Lily--boy, we've got lots of young'uns lately! I'm so sorry for your diagnoses. Your numbers don't look absolutely terrible, but I bet you probably need fluids. Are you doing those yet? They really help. They really got my numbers down, and they've stayed really good. I'm seldom much out of the normal range these days, though my creatinine probably got to about 4 and my BUN probably got to around 60 at one time. I was diagnosed in 2003 (5 years ago!) and am still doing great. We have another kitty here named Cindy, and she is also a VERY long-term survivor. It's not a death sentence, just a condition that needs to be managed and can be managed for quite some time if you put work into it. And don't let the "75% of kidney function gone" get to you too much. They have a lot of reserve, and it truly takes losing that much before you even begin to show symptoms. And good luck with the food! I'm not sure it makes a real significant difference, so don't let your family be too stressed if you don't like it. The important thing is that you keep eating and keep your strength up. Sounds like you've got a huge family rooting for you, so hang in there and enjoy the holidays!
