Well it is nice to meet all of you. I just found out yesterday my Suzy has the start of asthma. She has been "hacking" for months now. At first I thought it was a hairball, then something maybe stuck in her stomach but no. She is also very wheezy and when really stressed breathes with her mouth open.
After watching some videos of cats having an asthma attack and reading about feline asthma I was fairly certain that is what Suzy was suffering from.
I took her to the vet and expressed my concerns and he seems to think she has the start of asthma, maybe being caused by allergies. We haven't changed anything in our household and other than her breathing and "hacking" fits that is all that appears to be wrong with her.
They gave her a steroid shot yesterday that should last for about 6 weeks he hopes and put her on some antibotics for inflamed nasal passages. He said her lungs were very wheezy but her heart sounded good. Not sure where we are going after this it just depends on how long the shot lasts I guess. Any advice or comments would be great. This is all very new to me. Not sure what to do or even ask when I go to the vet with her. I have noticed in the last 24 hours she has only had one episode where she is hacking so I assume that is good.

Hi Suzy:

Marrakech and Samsara were both diagnosed with it over the summer too. They're half-sisters, so I supose they were genetically predisposed to it. Marrakech got Prednizone, antibiotics, and an asthma medicine, all of which she's been weaned off of. Samsara, who hacks also, doesn't have as bad a case and just got the asthma medicine. I have extra asthma medicine (pills) in case either one of them really needs it.

I've found the times Marrakech's coughing has been really bad, that it helps to keep her by the open window for a few minutes.

Needless to say, I'm not smoking in the apartment anymore. cry

Hi! Horus was diagnosed last May. He had been having that hacking thing on and off for a couple of months (we adopted him October 2007). I thought it was hairballs, and I mentioned it to the vet during a check-up. She said it sounded like it could be asthma (since he never brought any hairballs up), and suggested doing some tests. After x-rays and a broncho-alveoli lavage (they put a sterile wash into his lungs and then sucked it out again to look at the cells in his lungs), it was confirmed he had asthma. The x-rays also showed that he has an enlarged heart. There was no way to tell from the x-ray whether his heart was enlarged from being overweight or from heart disease, so prednisone (which can cause weight gain) was not a good option to treat the asthma. So we started Horus on Flovent, which is an inhaled medication. We use an AeroKat to give him the medicine. He is doing very well on it. The vet didn't give us a rescue inhaler or anything, I don't think his asthma is that bad. He doesn't have any attacks unless he misses a couple of doses for some reason (long story there!!)
