So I am new to Dogster and I love this community already. We have a 5, almost 6 month old pup named Wrigley and I have one question for all you golden experts. When did your dogs master fetching? Wrigs LOVES LOVES chasing balls, sticks, ect, but he has a hard time bringing them back to us. He usually gets distracted by something blowing in the wind. Of course he is still a puppy, but we are just curious if anyone has had a similar experience. We are so happy though that he is already obsessed with swimming (and retrieving the balls from the water). Thanks smilesmile

Woof wrigley...Dont feel bad lil guy I still dont like to give the ball back.I usually turn my body around so my tail and butts facing them.Mom says Give but, I just wiggly my butt at her. Then she ignores me until I drop it.Then she throws it again. What we should be doing is keeping them on a long training leash toss the ball say fetch they get the ball and we start calling them and reeling them in of course once they are by us say give and of course the good boy & treat......them being Gordon junior and wrigley.....blue dog

Buddy NEVER drops his toy at your feet like you see on tv! LOL..I'm thinking he was around the age of your puppy when he understood what he was susposed to do (you know, actually bring the toy BACK! ha ha). Dogs are like children, each one learns at his/her own pace!!! Have fun playing!!!!!!

Jack was probably a year old before he decided to get obsessively interested in tennis balls! big grin The sure fire way to get him to drop it is to have a second ball. I've discovered that when he doesn't want to give up the ball is when he is getting tired or hot... but after a dip in the pool and a drink he's ready to go again! snoopy

the "retriever" part of our name is deceiving. I will chase a tennis ball forever, and bring it back, but I will also turn away instead of giving it up. Chad won't even chase the ball.

Hopefully Wrigley will get the hang of giving you the ball or stick. Lots of praise, or even a little treat, when he gives you the item may help. Good luck!
