These kitties need homes, most are going to PetSmart for adoption days and I thought this post could get more people to come check them out.
Oreo is estimated to be a little over two years old. She was a neighborhood stray at one of mommy's former co-worker's house. I don’t believe she was feral, but she may have been abused by the neighborhood kids. This lady was very good with cats and soon after regular feedings, she got Oreo to trust her enough to pet her, hold her and bring her inside for short periods of time. Her husband was transferred to another state and she asked if Oreo could live in my backyard. Mommy agreed, got her spayed, Combo tested (Feline Leukemia and Aids which was negative), and vaccinated. She did not yet know mommy well and was quarantined for a week in my bathroom during her recovery so mommy would be able to catch her in order to take her back to the vet to get her stitches out. After that was done she refused to go outside. Slowly but surely she began to trust mommy, let her pet her, and let her hold her. She is now one of the friendliest cats I’ve met, but mommy is the only human she knows. She loves to be held upside down like a baby so she can have her belly rubbed, she must think she's a dog. She has stopped hiding under the bed all day and has taken up a permanent roost on the Ab Lounger, but she is startled by loud noises or strangers coming into the house and will disappear until the commotion settles down. This is why I do not believe she would do well with young children. Mommy has had friends that come over interact with her a little and after a few visits she has warmed up, though she is still a little uncomfortable. I was sure she would need to live with me permanently because of her extreme shyness, but now mommy and I feel comfortable that she can be adopted out to a very patient cat-lover that has more room for her, though I mommy will miss her terribly after more than a year of caring for her.
Spot, Star, Miss Kitty, Simba, (Tigger was adopted) are a litter that was brought to mommy's vet shortly before she showed up for the weekly appointment with her current litter of 3 (all adopted, yeah!!). The minute mommy got there all the Techs asked her if she could re-home this litter because the owners could not afford the medicine to treat them. After they reached 8 weeks old they have been going to adoption days at Petsmart in attempts to find their forever homes, but they are growing so fast (now over five months old) I’m afraid that they are quickly losing their “cuteness factor” though they never will with mommy.
Black Jack and his sister, Shelly were found in a Winn Dixie parking lot during temperatures in the 90's and taken to a local vet. A customer paid for all shots, de-wormer, and Capstar. Mommy took them home. They have both been adopted.
Kitty Litter is litter of five that was spotted inside a parked boat before their eyes were even open and their mother was nowhere to be found. Because the people who found them owned large dogs, they could not keep them until they were old enough to adopt out. They were very concerned about roaming neighborhood dogs and were put in contact with mommy and she has been bottle-feeding them ever since. They are now 13 weeks old (Sepember 14) Two are black, one is half black & half white, one is mostly white with black spots, and one is mostly white with tabby patches. The Black kittens were adopted as a pair a well as the two spotted white kittens. One black and white kitten still available.
Four orange kittens and their mom were rescued from a trailor park with a cat-hating landlord. He frequently disposed of strays on his own, without involving animal control. They are all orange, mama and one girl also have white on them, the girl was adopted. The mama and three boys are available for adoption
Hi Coco,
Just a note about the kittens who are getting older. Does the rescue your Mama volunteers at spay/neuter before adoption?? Ours does at about 4-5 mos. , so we know the kittens that don't get adopted soon are going to be tomorrow's "teenagers" who have already been spay/neutered. That makes them HIGHLY adoptable since they are the same price.
Good Luck finding those forever homes!! Your Mama sounds like mine - taking in alot of kitties with sad stories and hauling them to the petstore on the weekends. Right now we have a litter of 4, 2 litters of 2, and 1 single kitten we've had forever it seems. He has been sick in the past and is not growing well. Mama was suspecting FIP for awhile, but now she is not so sure.
Good Luck again and thanks for joining!!
Yes, their adoption fee covers, spay/neuter regardless of age. They are done at six months. If they are adopted before they reach that age the adopter takes their paperwork with them to the contract vet when they turn six months old. Since its already paid for, what petowner wouldn't take them?? Just in case, the rescue does follow ups with the vet. I also administer FVRCPP boosters to alot of the rescue's kittens and cats (there is one other volunteer that does this as well) at 8, 12, 16 weeks, and yearly as long as they are still under the rescue's care, after they are adopted any remaining boosters are the adopter's responsibility. If they reach 10 weeks and are still in the rescue's care they are taken to the cotract vet by their foster parents for FIV/FeLV Combo Test and at 16 weeks same goes for the rabies vaccine. Deworming is done upon entering the program and as necessary along with vaccines. The rescue also takes care of medical problems that may arise, through their contract vet.
It's a pretty good deal for only $80.
My first litter this year was found caught in fishing line in a shed for an unknown amount of time. One kitten had a very swollen paw and another actually had a hidden laceration between the pads one front paw and ended up losing four toes All three had also developed an upper respiratory infection and required daily antibiotic shots for four days of two seperate weeks, twice daily eye meds for a couple weeks, twice daily oral antibiotics for over a month, and the kitten who lost her toes needed her paw flushed, antibiotic cream applied and re-bandaged daily for about three weeks.
The big kids had severe upper respiratory infections and were on the oral antibiotics, shots, and eye meds for several weeks as well before they could go up for adoption.
I had to take my bottlefeds to the vet I work for between two and three weeks because one of them was giving me a scare and was told they had already developed worms and they were given a parial dose of dewormer.
My newest litter of two were given dewormer, shots, and a Capstar before I got them, but I later found and had to treat them for tapeworms
My big babies are getting tested soon, wish us luck!!!
Your medical protocol sounds alot like ours. We deworm and deflea on intake and give the first distemper at 6 wks. and the second at 9 wks., which is when the kitten goes for adoption. We will give a third shot at 12-13 wks. if we still have the kitten. Rabies shots are normally given when the kitty is spay/neutered. All kittens are Felv tested at 9 wks. before adoption. We test older kittens and adults for Felv/FIV. We do this ourselves, as we have many people who can draw blood. I am not one of them, although I give shots and subQ fluids. We give a discount certificate for s/n upon adoption if the kitty is not done already. It is usually for 30% off, but each vet listed on it gives their own discount. We also give a free vet visit to be used within 2 wks. of adoption (during the trial period). Once a wk. we transport cats for low cost s/n for our cats awaiting adoption and for other people who otherwise can't afford the vet. There are no income requirements, but most people are probably low income. We also take feral cats who get a complete workup.
Last year we s/n more cats than we adopted (999 vs. 956), and this year looks the same. We are on track to s/n alot more than last year, and our adoptions are also up too.
Good luck with your kitties!! I hope they all find forever homes soon.
Our kittens are desexed once they are over a kilo, and about 1.5kg for the leaner Oriental crosses. Prior to desexing, they are out on foster. Noone can adopt a kitty from our shelter without it being desexed.
Good luck with your kitties! It sounds like they have a superstar in their corner
(P.S. I know what you mean about getting your mum to yourself. We haven't had any fosters for 10 days, and I LOVE it!)
Thanks Suey!! It will be awhile before I get my house and mummy back even if Sunday goes well, because of the babies. They still drink out of a bottle 1-2 times a day even though I caught them eating out of the bowl. Their food smells soooooo yummy. I try to steal it when they're out playing. They can't go for at least three weeks, I can't wait!!! At least mummy makes time for each and every one of us including my grown up family that aren't on Catster yet, but I don't like it at all when the kittens try to play with me!!!
Tigger got adopted!! He was one of five of the 3 month old litter. The rest are staying at PetSmart til Tues. I got a little breathing room for a couple days
Good for you Coco!!! We're glad one of the older ones went.
Mama couldn't go to Petco on Sat. cause it was her Sat. to volunteer at the adoption center. She took the fosters on Sun., but it was slow. So now we have them all another week until the weekend.
We are also getting a Mama cat with 6 - 2 wk. old kittens tonight. She was a stray that wandered in someone's house and they kept her. This is her second litter since they've had her. Of couse the excuse was that they got too busy to spay her and then she got out and OOOOPS. Oh well, we love fostering Mama's with babies.
Thanks Quincy!! Hurray for our friend Dixie Dan a three year old that's been going to PetSmart for over a year, got adopted today The rescue also got three more kittens besides my little Tigger adopted
