I'd like to know of any health risks identified with tabbys. Gabbie is 8 and has been healthy her entire life. But she's getting older and I worry.

First of all, let me say that Tabbies tend to be pretty darn healthy. I am only speaking from the experience of having Tabbies - I am not a 'vet' or anything. As with any kitty that is aging the thing I have seen most predominantly is kidney issues. Much of this can be headed off by feeding them a good quality feed that promotes kidney health and taking care they get plenty of fresh water. Of course I would check with my veterinarian first, but other than that, just enjoy your baby's obvious good health!!

P.S. - George has had urinary issues so he is on Hill's Prescription c/d. I am not trying to start a controversy by mentioning this because I know many have their own opinions about good quality feed. This diet has worked for him. I am also switching him to the kitty watering fountain to encourage more water consumption. kitty

Tabbies are usually a domestic mixed cat this means that on average they are generally healthier than other "pure" breeds. That being said however each cat is different and may have different weaknesses in thier health.

Did you have a specific concern or was it General? If it is general then the only issue that is hard to spot until it is too late is kidney failure the kidney can compensate for up to 75% of damage that is you most probably will not notice anything wrong with your kitty untill it's kidney is functioning at 24% or lower. Unfortunatly it is usually too late at this point.

Some signs to watch for
blood in the urine
pain while urinating
suddenly drinking from the toilet ( when he never used to)
urinating in the sink or bathtub
sleeping in the sink or bathtub (when he never used to)

So unless you notice anything unusuall there is nothing much to worry about. Mixed breed cats can easily live 15 - 20 years with no health issues period.

hope some of this info helps.wave
