wool yarn safety collars, to knit or to crochet?

	My mommy makes cotton safety cat collars, but has noticed many kitty friends can't wear these or any other collars because it makes bald rings on their necks. So she's read about wool collars as an alternative and was thinking about trying to make some of those. Structurally it would just be an 18 by .5 inch strap, then the closure goes on and the other hardwear. She has experience with knit and crochet, but not recently enough to decide which would work better for the collars, and what size hooks or needles would be best. So any ideas on what would be best would be great, especially as she hasn't bought any of the stuff to make 'em yet!

	My Maw told me that a friend made a cat toy out of wool, and the kitty slobbered on it so much that it began to felt. MOL. I like to lick my collars, so that might not be the best idea. But as long as they're not tight, they shouldn't make bald rings. (I actually like to run around naked, but then Maw and Grandmaw can't find me, so they make me wear the bell.)

	I like to run around in the nude to, I always take my collars off and only wear neck attire for pictures. I could see lots of licking being a prob with yarn!

	If it unravels, its dangerous for a cat to ingest. Wool is not a great thing to put with cats. We dont have collars anyway and its better to be naked - even safety collars can get caught and the ridge in the fur takes weeks to get rid of...

	I thought about the raveling to. A human would need to examine it frequently to make sure it is okay, probably more bother than lots of people would want to put forth, you're probably right, it isn't safe enough. I still don't wear a collar myself, I take them off immediately. I have a microchip, however. My sister, Ming seems to like to wear a collar. They break open with 5 lbs of force, so as long as a kitty is more than 5 lbs and strong enough to exert 5 lbs of pull, they can take them off if they get hooked. Mum wouldn't recommend any collar for kittens or feeble kitties or kitties who are major spazzes, though. Ming has no chip, so she needs her ID tag.

	That-Woman-Who-Tells-Me-No was contemplating the same thing, as I have bad luck with collars. My worsted-wool wontons are the only knit items that stand up to my constant carnage, though, so she hasn't figured out a comfortable way to make one that won't rub me too much. Should your Mommy figure it out, though, she wants to know.
