Mr D - D'boat #19 - HOME AGAIN!

Here's some of the stories of hope, that were p-mailed to me.

Squirrel wrote….

There was one cat on Catsters, a while back, that was missing for over a month and they suspected their neighbor had poisoned it but it came back fine. Thin, but fine.
Our cat Penny (when I was a kid) went missing for a few days and also came back fine but a bit thinner. We figure she got into the railway building (mousing) and locked in for the weekend.
My sister has a cat that often goes missing and shows up at the pound requiring a hefty fee to free him.
I hope Mr. D gets out of whatever he has gotten himself into, and gets home!
Getting the word out real quick is exactly what to do.

There was a cat in another group the other day who was missing for 3 days in 11 degree snowstorm!! And HE came back home safely....so you can, too!!

One of our friends cats disappeared for 5 days last year...we are pretty sure she got locked in someones garage or shed. It is pretty hot here in summer so a lot of people leave their garage doors open six inches or so during the day and we think she went in and got stuck there, she was thin but fine.

Jackson wrote… (about jack)

I had trouble believing that he was alive and well and would come home but turns out cats are much more resourceful than you think and can survive on their own. I knew that Jack wanted to come home and as soon as he could, he did. - don't give up on him.

Tyler - Mr Boombastic wrote..

Many years ago after our mum had moved to the Caribbean and left her two cats with her sister, one of them went missing. Her sister was beside herself with worry, then would you believe it, after six long weeks, Sophie turned up (on Christmas Day of all days) just as if nothing had happened.

On the flip side of this story, we are currently caring for a little lost cat we have named Fifi. She has been with us since early December and mum has tried everything to locate her real owner (she's wearing a collar but no tag). After weeks of newspaper and online ads, knocking on doors and putting flyers around the neighborhood, we still have had no luck. Our vet thinks she has simply been dumped, or abandoned as the result of a house move.

I'm telling you these stories for two reasons: 1) don't give up hope! If Sophie could make it back to a house she barely knew after six weeks on the prowl, so can Mr. D;
2) Should someone have picked up Mr. D having found him "lost", they are likely taking as good care of him as we are trying to with Fifi (who is sitting on our coffee table and watching mum as she writes this!)

I'll be purrring fur you and hoping to see a "happy ending" story in your Diary, too!.

Mr. D....Leo is a large ill-tempered 18 lb. stray cat. He is your classic alley cat. He has gone away for as long as six weeks and always comes back looking fine. He does not look thin and his fur looks great when he showed back up. He spends more time grooming himself than his sister Venus...MOL! He can feed himself anytime with what he can catch. I am sure that Mr. D is fine and will come back. Leo is one tough cat! He was run over by a car three years ago and made it home with a broken leg, ribs and cut up. I had the vet fix him up with a cast and he is fine now. Since he got ran over he stays very close to home now

Curly (8544887) that wrote this to me this morning:

We don't know Mr. D purrsonally, but we feel very sad that he has gone missing so long. His family should not give up hope; Mom says that my late brother Shortstop went missing for 17 days back in 1985...Mom did everything to try and find him: She ran an ad in the newspaper, put flyers up all over the neighborhood and in everyone's mailboxes, and made daily trips to the animal shelter, all to no avail. Then after 17 days, he just showed up meowing at the door one night, and they had eleven more good years together before he went to the Bridge. Mom never did know where Shorty was all that time, and he never told her, but she always suspected that someone just took a liking to him and tried to keep him, but he got out and came home when he had the chance.

Just a lil' word of hope... my uncle Leo (looks just like me) was missing for 2 weeks & came home all on his own. We think that maybe our neighbor had taken him in, cause when Leo came back he was not matted & under norished.

In 1998 I moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Modesto (2 hours away by car( with my Beaubeau
6 months later I moved to Upstate New York and didnt want to take Beaubeau on a long plane ride without making sure I was going to stay,
2 weeks later I received a phone call from the friend watching him and she told me he had run away.
This was NOT like Beau as he ALWAYS came home for dinner
I came home a week later brokenhearted from my NY experience and still NO BEAU!
A week and a half later after running all over the neighborhood several times a day calling for my Beau HE CAME HOME AT DINNER TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He was meowing so loud!!!! It was the sound of my boy wanting to let me know IM HOME MOM!!!!!
I ran to the door and flung it open with the kids that I was nannying for in tow, and there he was:
covered in fleas and wrapped in packing tape around neck and legs and body and tail...A MESS but SO HAPPY TO SEE ME and I HIM!
I laughed and cried so hard and so did Beau, even through the bath (which he hated)
MY BOY CAME HOME!!!!!!!!!!
I was never so happy for an early Christmas present( it was Dec 14th) in all my days!
It still makes me cry in joy that he came home to stay with me another 5 years and cry that he went through so much to find his way home to be with me!

I have two sories to relate.
The first one is about myself. Three years ago November gone I went missing. Mum did everything that she should & could do to try & find me, but no luck, she didn't ever give up. Then, mid evening nineteen days later she looked out of the patio doors and there I was, sitting in the sun room waiting to come in.
Boy were we both happy.
I was fit & well but I had lost some weight.
Mum thinks that I got shut in a house that was being done up close by us. The people working on it had gone away, she thinks that I got out as soon as they came back.
Since then I've never been far from the garden or the field out the back.

The second story is about my cousin Sprocket.
Four years ago in October he had his lunchtime snack, went out and just dissapeared. Again, all was done that could possibly be done to find him & again no luck, untill one afternoon a month later his mum looked out of the kitchen window, to see Sprocket sitting on the step, grooming as if nothing at all had happened.
He too was fit & well, just lost weight.

Ten years ago Bonkers my indoor only cat slipped out and was no where to be found. There was never one single sighting of him for 8 months. One day I heard loud meowing and looked at my other cat but her lips weren't moving. I ran to the door and here was Bonkers! His collar was missing and I almost didn't recognize him because he was so skinny, just a bag of bones. He could barely walk. He was vomiting insects, poor boy. I took him to the vet and he had to put a jell like pack under Bonkers skin to hydrate him, he was so sick he couldn't drink water himself. Slowly he grew stronger and stronger until he was big and strong again like his old self. He lived many years after that. I always remember this when I want to give up hoping for Pixie. You never know.

Dear all,

I am so happy, we found our Toshka on Friday!!!

I apologize for writing to all of you only now, I was
removing the posters (as people kept calling and looking for
Toshka after we found him) and visiting the vet. Toshka had
something going on with his stomach and needed detailed
examination. It turned out he has infection, which affected
his bowel seriously enough. Let me tell you the whole story
now.

But before I start, I would like to express my deepest
gratitude to all of you for support I received from this
group in the most difficult moments. You always were here
for me able to find the words which gave me more strength,
hope and encouraged me to further search for Toshka.

Here is the story.
Toshka ran away from our friend’s house, 20 miles away
from our house, on August 1st. Our friends thought he would
return and did not start to search for him at once. We
returned from our travel 2 days later, immediately
distributed the fliers in 1 mile radius in the neighborhood
and activated FindToto.com on the 4th day. Within one week,
we received 2 phone calls from different places. We searched
both, but did not find anything confirming Toshka was there.

Judy, after you shared detective Laura Totis’ contact
information with me, I immediately contacted her; Laura and
her wonderful dog Chewy came on the 7-th day, and the dog
showed activity in the area between the house Toshka was
lost and one the places we received phone calls from, and no
activity in the other “phone call” place . Now, I can
tell, that we found Toshka exactly in the direction Chewy
showed maximum activity. So, I think that the dogs can take
the trace.

We set up feeding places and camera we received from Laura
close to the house Toshka was seen and dog Chewy was active,
and for 3 weeks had all possible animals on the pictures,
but no Toshka. We continued to receive rare phone calls from
different places (3 miles one from the another). The people
reported they saw similar cat the day before or on the
weekend…. We went to each place and called Toshka,
searched the woods, distributed fliers again, but nothing
worked.
Finally, two weeks ago, we ordered 20 big laminated posters
“house for sale” type with Toshka’s picture and 250$
reward, and placed them on major crossways.
On Tuesday this week, a gentleman called and said that his
team was doing construction work in the area of John Hopkins
Institute, and within last few days, a cat kept meeting them
in the morning when they go to work. They tried to catch the
cat but although the cat was not afraid of the people, he
did not let anyone come close, and ran into the woods. My
husband was beginning to become skeptical about the phone
calls, and he asked the man for details…. And it was
unbelievable that the man described the cat very clearly,
and even mentioned something green on the cat’s neck
(Toshka was wearing green collar and green bell). He also
mentioned that they had doubts themselves and brought one of
our posters and compared with the cat. The gentleman was
strongly positive that was our cat. He wanted the trap
immediately.

We ran to the area, called Toshka, searched the woods, and
although we did not find him, we were able to talk to the
other people who confirmed that they saw this cat few times.
We arranged a feeding place and put the camera, and started
to go to the area every day in the evening after work. The
area belongs to John Hopkins Institute, and we did not
search it earlier (just put one flier) because there was
only one small office type house there, few people, no other
cats, no dogs…. It is a quiet area on the edge of the
woods, with picnic tables, small warehouse, tennis courts,
and baseball field not often used… Later, we found out
that we were not supposed to trespass the area as it was a
part of the Institute, and they even had a warning poster in
the bushes, but we did not see it, until the security
officer spotted my husband at the feeding place on Thursday
and asked him to leave the area and not to return, did not
want to hear about any cat, took
my husband’s contact information and reported to the
security office….. After this happened, next morning, on
Friday, I (furious and ready for serious actions) went to
the place, searched the area, and as soon as I saw security
car, I stopped it, and asked the officer how can I get
permission to come to the area as I was definitely intending
to stay there. To my surprise, he responded that no
permission was needed. He was more interested in receiving
the flyer with Toshka’s picture than moving me from the
territory. I gave him the picture, and he assured me that
all security officers will be looking for my cat. I thanked
him, went to the feeding place, and was sitting there
quietly, thinking what else could be done as I finished my
search for this morning. And, here I saw the security car
coming back to me. I thought the officer would also ask me
to leave, but he said he just saw a cat close to the trash
cans. I ran there, and the officer drove
there as well (he blocked cat’s way from one side, so
the cat moved in my direction), and ….. I saw the cat
40-50 feet away…. He was slowly walking from the cans to
the office house direction…. He looked wild and angry
because we were annoying him with our presence and
disturbing his breakfast.… I was not sure if this was
Toshka (he looked differently) , but spontaneously called
him… he did not pay attention…. I called again…. and
he stopped and sat down ….. if you could see his face! He
was so surprised to see me! Here, I had no doubts: that was
my Toshka! I ran to him, and he ran to me, and I took him on
my arms, and he started complaining and we both could not
believe that was happening…. Well, when we came home,
Toshka was behaving as he was not missing for 7 weeks but
just steped out for few minutes. He did not loose any weigh
or change his behavior, except he shows more interest to the
kitchen table. He became more confident and
more attached to us.
Toshka had health problems though: he could not urinate,
had no bowel movements for 20 hours although he tried many
times and his belly was very hard. It seemed strange to me
and I took him to the vet immediately. It turned out he had
rare infection, but not contagious for humans and hopefully
treatable with antibiotics. We started treatment and already
microchiped him.

Summarizing Toshka’s story, I can say that it confirmed
that cats do not go far away from the place they were lost
unless they jump into the car. Toshka was found 0.5 miles
away from the house he was lost, and about 0.25 miles from
the place Chewy showed activity. Toshka probably did not
reach his final home at the time Chewy was looking for him,
and was in the middle of his way.
Fliers and posters and TotoLoto work. All people we talked
to mentioned that they received a phone call and a flyer.
Search dogs do take the track of the cat, and if Laura Totis
and her dog Chewy are not on the detective list yet, I would
recommend adding them.
We were able to catch Toshka without feeding places and
camera, but I am sure sooner or later he would have found
the feeder and the camera would have taken his picture as he
was found only about 120 feet away from the feeder. I am not
sure if he would have entered the trap though….
In our case, what worked the best were bigger posters on
the roads with the reward sum mentioned on them. Of course,
we rewarded the gentlemen who called us and the officer who
helped me, although the officer did not even want to hear
about this (he has cat at home) – we found the way to
thank him avoiding money question.

Although I found Toshka, I would like to stay with our
wonderful group.
I will not promise to write often as English is not my
native language, but I want to be available for those in my
area who need help with printing and distributing fliers,
setting up and supporting feeding places and camera,
visiting shelters. I live in Rockville, MD, and if you find
out somebody needs help in this area, please do not hesitate
and refer them to me.

Judy, I would like to mention here that the quote from
Edmund Burke you have in your e-mails kept me moving and
became my mojo in the search: "Nobody made a greater
mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a
little". It is so true.

Thank you all once again,

Milena

Momma made a boo-boo and left the gate of the little courtyard open for 2 minutes. I'm usually sleeping under the covers at that time and she ran and closed the gate and forgot to look for me. And I was curious and wanted to see what was beyond the gate. 2 hours later, when she called, I was so scared and hiding. She put up flyers--and mean people tore them down. She put up more and got a call from PAWS telling her that if she didn't take all 50+ down that she would be fined 250 a poster!!!! She was heartbroken and left 10 up, but took most down. Except for the mail-lady who said that mailboxes are federal property and she couldnt 'get in trouble. She put an ad in the newspaper and at the local grocery, all the vets, and went door to door. She knew that since I was an indoor cat, I couldnt' be too far, but I hadn't been feeling well prior to getting lost. I was sick and couldn't move my hind legs from dehydration. Momma lives in the desert. I had one hidey place under the shrubs of a neighbor 3 house down--momma could tell because all the rocks had been pushed away and there was dirt in the shape of my body.
After a week, she thought I had gone over the bridge but she still tried and tried and called every night between 1 - 6 am when it was quiet. I tried to meow once but I was so weak that she couldnt' find me.
Then she sprinkled used kitty litter--compliments of my older sisterlittle angel around the streets with the most around the closest homes, as she read that indoor cats are displaced and usually hide very close to home.
The smell made me feel safer and somehow I got into a big thorny rosemary bush in front of the house across the street. They were doing construction next door to my house and it was too scary to get close.
The neighbor's dog smelled me and barked and the neighbor went outside and looked in the bush and saw me. But I heard her dog and ran as fast as I could away again. Momma was at the doctor and she was so sad that she wasn't home. She left the doctor but it was too late.
But she didnt' give up. She sprinkled more litter around MY HOUSE. I live in a guesthouse. My Momma was in the big house and left the door to the guesthouse open so I could push it--she didn't want my sister to get out.
After it was night again and quiet, at around 1 am, I summoned all my strength and used my nose and I found my door and pushed it and hid under the bed.
Momma screamed and cried when she saw the door was open.
I'm so glad that she left food and water out every day, as the first two days--before she knew that indoor cats stay so close--she was driving far away and walking around the golf course and goign to the animal shelters.
She noticed a little food was gone the first 2 nights, but then I got scared and really got lost.
Never give up.
I'm still not feeling well and not eating or drinking, and I hate the pills the vet gave momma to give me and the syringe to squirt water in me. And while I purred so loudly the first night, I'm not purring as loudly today. I just feel sick. But I am HOME!!! And warm. And I sleep now with my paws on my momma's body so I know she is there. I'm sure I will get better soon. My nose was gray when I got home and it had a big scab on it. I think I scratched it on the bushes I was hiding on.
Momma didn't even know that I could dig into such tight bushes and hide. I am a good hider and the coyotes didn't get me like everyone said they would.
And my nose is starting to get pinker again. I think the anti-biotics are making me feel nauseous, but I do eat a little tuna in water, or rather lap it up. I tried to eat a lot the first day and I threw up. I think my body needs to heal.
Momma is going to the health food market to try to find better medicine than the vet provides. If anyone knows what helps kitties who have been traumatized, please let her know.
And Luna and her Momma is saying prayers for every animal who is lost.
She put up candles from the link she found on Alfie and Mr. Ds Purrs and Woofs and she thinks that the thousands of prayers made me come home.
Momma just lost her brother on December 16th and she prays for him too. I'm glad she prays for me.
The candle site is very pretty.

LUNA SAYS "NEVER GIVE UP"

Howie

Me, Me, Me!

Purred: Mon Feb 2, '09 10:36am PST
That's right, never give up!

My Howie was gone for 7 weeks starting at the beginning of September, having snuck out of the front door as I was packing up my car to go on vacation with my boyfriend. I had tried everything--posters, ads, twice weekly visits to the shelter, and walking around my neighborhood every night calling his name. Not one sighting of him.

After 5 weeks, sightings of coyotes in the area, and some cruel people hoaxing responses to my add, I decided to move on and signed a lease into a new apartment (that only allowed my 2 remaining cats), away from the scary coyotes in the wetlands.

I was all packed up, 2 days before I moved, and I got a frantic call from my neighbor, saying she had seen my Howie. I ran outside and started calling, and I heard his little "mew" from the other side of the fence that bordered my apartments. I ran over, and saw his little face, and he scurried out from under the fence and jumped into my arms. OMG! My sweet baby! He was skin and bones, but purred like crazy. After a couple weeks getting settled at the new place, we went to the vet and he said despite being skinny, he was just fine.

This was a little over 3 months ago, and he's finally back to his normal self (weight and trouble maker status). Sure, I'm breaking my new apartment rules by having him, but I don't really care.

I always wondered what happened. He was skinny, but not dehydrated, and showed no signs of parasites, trauma, or other health problems. The vet said maybe at first he enjoyed exploring, but then got lost, and hunkered down in a building somewhere, drinking rainwater and eating bugs.

BTW, I have noticed now he won't go outside my front door. He'll go on the porch if I'm with him, but he's really scared of exploring, which to me is a good thing.

When I look at him I still can't believe it. Miracles do happen, and my found kitty is the proof!
