I'm brand new too, and would like to know what you "old timers" would recommend. In my case, I'm particularly interested in homemade CAT food.

For your reference, Jasper, my wholistic vet just gave me the following advice:

for meat: fish, chicken, beef, venison... cooked or raw (particularly for young cats) is fine.

Supplement with Calcium: she recommends bone meal or Calcium Citrate, using about 1/4 the package's recommended human dose. Though I only have cats, she did mention that dogs can get a good amount of calcium simply by gnawing/consuming beef bones and wouldn't need this much supplementation.

Leafy Greens: if you finely mince a fresh green like parsley, cilantro, spinach, etc. and mix in about 1 Tb. per cat per day, it boosts the nutrients AND prevents hairballs!

I've noticed that good wet foods like Evo and Merrick contain some vegies, fruits, & potatoes too, so I'll probably mix some of those in too... but stick with mostly meat.
