If Cats Could Talk – Thanksgiving Preparations

Dolly jumped down from her perch on the chair and wandered into the kitchen with her nose twitching in the air. “What’s that I smell?” she asked. “And what’s all this work in the kitchen you’re doing today? Hey, Breakfast Lady! Why all the food preparation?”

Sue continued to cut up some onions, dabbing her eyes with a hanky, and admonished Dolly by saying, “You don’t have to keep calling me the Breakfast lady. I’d prefer it if you would call me Susu like my grandchildren do. And for your information, I’m preparing a Thanksgiving Day dinner.”

“Like last year? Great! Are you going to leave the turkey and ham unwrapped on the table again this year?”

“If I catch you snacking on the turkey again I’m going to throw you in the garage and you can stay there for a week for all I care. You’re such a naughty girl!”

“Uh, I’m sorry I brought that up. You left the meat out, I thought it was for me. But that was last year. It’s over now. Can we put that behind us and just move on, SUSU?”

Willie looked up from his chair in the kitchen and said, “Why can’t you just keep your mouth shut for once in your life, Dolly! You open it only when you want something to eat. And Susu will give us something to eat when she’s good and ready. Isn’t that right, Susu?”

“Of course, Sweet Ums” she answered.

“Oh, it’s Sweet Ums, not Silly Willie like the Candy Man calls you,” said Dolly derisively. “Sweet Ums, Sweet Ums, Hah, Hah, Hah!”

“Aw shut up!” hollered Willie.

“What’s the noise all about?” queried Cruiser as he rapidly entered the kitchen.

“Susu is preparing a Thanksgiving Day meal,” answered an annoyed Willie.

“Wonderful!” bellowed Cruiser. “Is Dolly going to steal some turkey slices for us again this year? Can you filch some ham too? I just love ham.”

“Did you have to mention that too?” complained Dolly. “Susu hasn’t forgiven me for that and she hardly needs a reminder.”

“By the way,” began Cruiser, “does this mean that her whole family will be here again? What a noisy bunch! And all those little grandchildren of hers! Why can’t they learn to stop chasing us! Thank goodness they aren’t allowed into the bedroom. I hate hiding under the bed all the time but it’s the only place I’m safe when they are here.”

“You’re such a weenie!” proclaimed an angry Dolly. “The door bell rings and you run away like a Rottweiler is after you. If you would just learn to play with them a little.”

“Play? When the little one pulls me by the ear? That’s play?” he shot back.

“Come on, Cruiser,” interrupted Willie. “Calm down. This is supposed to be a happy family holiday, let’s be nice. The main thing here is how do we get a piece of that turkey. Last year Dolly did the dirty work for us but she’s been marked as the culprit by Susu. Who does the job this year?”

“Mmmm,” murmured Casey as he strolled into the kitchen. “”What is that delicious odor I smell? Could it be turkey with just a hint of sage dressing? What’s the occasion?”

“There’s your next culprit!” volunteered Cruiser. “I nominate Casey for the job. All in favor say aye. The ayes have it! You’ve been elected unanimously, Casey.”

“What’s this all about?” asked a surprised Casey.

“You’ve just volunteered to steal some of the turkey this Thanksgiving,” said Willie. “What a guy! Good luck, and remember, we’re all behind you waiting for a slice of the turkey. If you get caught, I don’t know you.”

Susu wrapped some tinfoil around the turkey at the counter and said, “I’m putting this bird in the refrigerator. Nobody will get close to it this year.”

“I thought Thanksgiving was a family holiday,” exclaimed Dolly. “I’m family! What a spoil sport! What’s so happy about Happy Thanksgiving if you can’t steal a little slice of turkey?”

“Keep your eye on that turkey,” said Willie. “the Thanksgiving Day holiday is just beginning.”

Cruiser looked thoughtful and said, “I have an idea for Thanksgiving Day. A way to let them know how thankful we are.”
