Well, it has been awhile since I've updated the group! I've had a busy summer with school, work and fun times with friends and of course, Terrence and Merrin! I hope all of your summers were pawsome too.

New Stuff: I've added a couple of fun new events to the calendar, the Stockley Gardens Ghent Dog Walk and the "Bad to the Bone" Motorcycle Ride and Poker Run! What fun and unique ways to raise money and awareness for our animal friends.

The Animal Rescue Site is new under the links section. While not a Hampton Roads site per se, it's a great broad-overview sort of site about animal rescue. Visit daily and just click the button raise money for homeless animals! This site also encompasses several other important awareness sites, including breast cancer and the rainforest.

I also wanted to let my feline friends' people know about a great book I'm reading. It's called Rescued, and it's about the animal rescue effort that went on in New Orleans immediately following Hurricane Katrina. I had of course heard about the Katrina animal rescue efforts, but I had no idea, until I read this book, just how dedicated, empassioned and exhaustive that effort was. Many people risked their lives in order to brave the toxic waters and dangerous situations to get the animals out of New Orleans and into a safe environment. Volunteers took vacation time, leaves of absence or even quit their jobs in order to offer their assistance. People from all walks of life traveled to Louisiana, on their own expense, to donate their time to these animals. Some of the volunteers worked 12, 18, even 24 hour days, went without showers and slept in their cars. What amazing people we have in this country, who are willing to lay down their lives for animals in this way. I was overwhelmed by what these people did for these animals, and you will be too if you check out this book.

The above book, and a similar book published by the Best Friends animal shelter, inspired me to go into animal rescue when I finish my biology degree in December. My degree is actually in marine biology, so perhaps I can put that to use in marine rescue. To gain some experience I've decided to volunteer at the Norfolk SPCA. I chose this shelter because it's one of the few no-kill shelters in the Hampton Roads area. To become a volunteer, first you fill out the application, then go to an orientation, and finally a class if you want to work directly with the animals. I'll keep you all updated on my journey to volunteering with the Norfolk SPCA!

P.S. Merrin, Terrence and I would love to hear all about your fun kitty summers! kittykitty
