| Purred: Thu Apr 19, '07 12:47am PST | | | | | | I just found out I have CRF yesterday My Vet gave me 12 different foods to try, knowing that I won't like some of them. I had 6 dry and 6 canned to try. I'm use to eating Wellness canned . This CRF canned food is yucky.
I decided that I liked the dry better. I picked Royal Canin/Waltham Renal LP and Purina NF. Daddy is also going to pick up some of the Eukanuba:Multi Stage Renal canned because I seemed to like it at one meal. Mommy will make sure I drink lots of water out of my fountains too.
Do any of you eat these foods? Or what food do you eat? Is this something we have to stay on for the rest of our life or just on and off? Do any of you eat a couple of different brands thru the week or do you stick with one?
Thanks for any posts!! | | | | |

| Purred: Thu Apr 19, '07 11:53am PST | | | | | | Hey there, sweetie! We meet again! You could always try mixing the varieties you like (or rather, tolerate) together...our momma used to mix Hill's Senior (the canned cooked with "Savory Sauce") in with my k/d to make it a little more palatable. Then, if I still wasn't having any of it, she'd kick-start my appetite with a little sprinkling of Kitty Kaviar on the top! It might just take a while & some experimenting before you can find a routine that works. And if you're really not liking your new food choices, maybe your vet can help you and your pawrents address the CRF through supplements (like Epikitin, or one of those phosphorus-binders) instead, and let you eat what you like! We're purrring 4 ya! And try not to get too down about it...you'll figure out something!

| Purred: Thu Apr 19, '07 2:26pm PST | | | | | | Hi, Rocky Ann! I can be a picky eater too, and I empathize! But please keep in mind that the important thing is that you eat. Kitties with CRF should never be allowed to waste away if they won't eat the Rx stuff, as your pawrents well know. I will eat the Purina NF dry just fine, but Mom also gives me regular canned food that I like. The vet says that the fluids in canned food are helpful for us CRF kitties. I used to eat Nutro, but that upset my tummy when they changed ingredients, so now I eat the Authority/PetsMart brand; both brands have no by-products, and I have heard that a good source of protein is important. But please keep in mind that my vet told me that there is debate as to how much difference the Rx foods really make, so don't be bummed if you can't eat it. Quality of life is very important too! Let us know how it goes! I remember how difficult the first week after diagnosis was, with the new food and treatments, so please feel free to p-mail anytime. Things really will be fine once you get settled into a routine. Take care!

| Purred: Thu Apr 19, '07 11:32pm PST | | | | | | Hi Abbie, Alex and Ashley!! Sorry to see you all here too but thank you for your helpful posts.
I have eaten one of the prescription foods well all day and seem to enjoy it. My stomach hasn't been upset. I'm eating the Royal Canin Renal LP dry. Daddy picked up a bag of the Purina NF too in case I want a change. I eat this for 30 days and see my Vet and check my blood levels again. Then we will be able to know if I knead to add supplements that he mentioned or if I have more choices of food.
All your support has really helped. Thank you so much.

| Purred: Sun Apr 22, '07 5:20pm PST | | | | | | Hi Rocky Ann, I eat Royal Canin Active Mature dry food, and I eat NutroMax Veal Pate wet food. (It doesn't have any rice protien or wheat gluten, so I don't have to be worried about icky poison) Since I am an old guy, I eat four small meals a day. I am lucky, my Mom works at home so she is around to feed me. Sometimes I have to take a half tablet of Pepcid, because CRF can make my tummy upset. My Meowmy gets the generic brand at Longs Drugs, so it's more affordable. I also get a little Non-Dairy Acidophilis (which is the good bacteria found in yogurt). It helps my tummy too. It comes in capsules in the refridgerated section of your local health food store. This is off subject, but I get sub-Q fluids twice a day. My meowmy found an inexpensive place to purchase them on the internet. Let me know if you need more info about that. The main thing is to find a food that you like to eat, because you have to keep up your figure at our age! | | | | |

| Purred: Mon Apr 23, '07 1:20pm PST | | | | | | MOL--I did the same thing to my mom! She got frustrated and brought home several different flavors for me to try. I knew exactly what I supposed to do. She presented me with food, and I would try it and then look up at Mom and meow to her to try the next one. When we finally hit the right flavor (salmon) I just kept gobbling it up! | | | | |
